For first-time travelers visiting Vietnam, investing in a local SIM is a smart choice that offers both cost efficiency and convenience. Let’s go on with all the things you need about the Vietnam SIM card for tourists!

Why do you need to get a prepaid Vietnam SIM card?

Using a Vietnam SIM card during your vacation is a great way to save money. International roaming allows you to use your home mobile network abroad, but it often comes with a lack of connection and high data, calls, and text costs.

On the other hand, even when you can access public wifi in Vietnam, local SIMs always provide stronger signals and faster data speeds in most areas.

Using a Vietnam SIM card will allow you to access local apps for transportation such as Bus Mapslocal ride-hailing apps (XanhSM and Be); ordering food and more, which is essential when traveling.

Another reason is that having a local SIM makes it easier to stay in touch with friends and family. You’ll have better network coverage and be connected all day long, it’s also easier to make local calls (booking tours, and restaurants) and keep in touch with any random local friends that you just meet on the trip.

>>>> A local SIM card is a smart choice for a worry-free and enjoyable trip in Vietnam.

How much does a SIM card cost in Vietnam?

The Vietnam sim card cost may vary depending on the sim form, data, and its validity.

  • For a physical SIM card, the SIM card itself costs about 50,000 VND (~$2.50). You’ll generally purchase your Vietnam SIM card as part of a mobile data package that will give you anywhere from 5GB – 30GB of data and cost between 150,000 – 300,000 VND ($6.50-$15).
  • For eSIM, they’re slightly more expensive on average, it costs you $9-$15

Common Issues with Your Vietnam SIM Card. | Source: Collected.

While using a SIM card in Vietnam, tourists might face some common issues. Here are the typical problems and quick solutions:

1. SIM Card Not Working

Problem: Your phone doesn’t recognize the SIM card, or you get a “No SIM” or “SIM not detected” error.

Solution:

  1. Check if the SIM card is properly inserted in the tray. Remove it, wipe the contacts gently, and reinsert it.
  2. Restart your phone to refresh the network connection.
  3. Ensure your phone is unlocked and supports the network frequencies used in Vietnam.
  4. If the issue persists, try inserting the SIM card into another phone to check if the problem is with the SIM or your device.
  5. Visit the provider’s store if you still can’t get it working.

2. Data Connection Issues

Problem: The SIM card is recognized, but you’re not getting internet access.

Solution:

  1. Check your APN settings (Access Point Name). These should automatically configure, but if not, manually input the APN details provided by your network provider. You can find these in the SIM card package or on the provider’s website.
  2. Restart your phone after updating the APN settings.
  3. Make sure mobile data is enabled on your phone and check that you’re not in airplane mode.
  4. Switch between 3G and 4G (or 5G) in your phone’s network settings to see if it improves connectivity.

3. Running Out of Data

Problem: You’re running out of data quickly, and your connection is throttled or cut off.

Solution:

1. Check your data balance using the USSD code for your provider to confirm how much data you have left.

  • Viettel: Checking via SMS by composing a message with KTTK send 191 (free of charge).
  • Vinaphone: dial *123# OK or *111# and press key 4.
  • Mobifone: dial *090# and press key 5.

2. If you’ve exhausted your data allowance, top up your account by purchasing a data package or using a scratch card or online method.

4. Difficulty Topping Up

Problem: You’ve purchased a scratch card, but the top-up isn’t working, or you’re struggling to top up online.

Solution:

  • Ensure you’ve entered the USSD code correctly. Double-check the PIN and retry the code (e.g., 100<PIN>#).
  • If you’re topping up online, verify your payment details and ensure your card or e-wallet has sufficient balance.
  • Restart your phone after topping up to refresh the new data balance.

5. Additional Tip: Contacting Customer Support

If none of these solutions work, contact customer support for your network provider:

  • Viettel: 18008098 or 198
  • Vinaphone: 18001091
  • Mobiphone: 18001090

They usually have English-speaking representatives available to help tourists. You can find their contact numbers on the SIM card packaging or on the provider’s website.
