First Time in Saigon: Everything You Need to Know (2026)

First time in Saigon? Here is the short version: most visitors need a $25 USD e-visa, a Grab from the airport to District 1 runs 110,000–250,000 VND (~$4–9.5), and cash plus QR codes rule daily spending. The city is far friendlier to beginners than its traffic suggests — this guide covers the rest, from our women riders who have welcomed 100,000+ guests.

What Should You Know Before Your First Time in Saigon?

Saigon — officially Ho Chi Minh City — is Vietnam’s biggest, busiest city, and a first time in Saigon is easier than it looks: English works in tourist areas, Grab replaces haggling with taxis, and street food is everywhere and inexpensive.

A few basics before you land:

First-day item Typical cost
Grab, airport → District 1 110,000–250,000 VND (~$4–9.5)
Street phở 40,000–70,000 VND (~$1.5–2.5)
Bánh mì 20,000–40,000 VND (~$1–1.5)
Cà phê sữa đá (iced milk coffee) 25,000–55,000 VND (~$1–2)
Vietnam e-visa, single entry $25 USD
Airport assistance, Standard arrival $30 USD

Prices are in Vietnamese đồng (VND); USD figures are approximate (≈26,500 VND to $1) and may change.

Do You Need a Visa Before You Arrive?

Most nationalities need a Vietnam e-visa: $25 USD for single entry or $50 USD for multiple entry, valid for stays up to 90 days, issued in about 3–5 working days.

Sort the visa out before anything else — nothing sours a first time in Saigon like being turned away at check-in. Apply only through the official government portal, evisa.gov.vn — third-party sites charge more for the same document. UK passport holders currently get 45 days visa-free. Full details, including visa on arrival, are on Vietnam’s official e-visa portal, evisa.gov.vn.

How Do You Get From Tan Son Nhat Airport Into the City?

Tan Son Nhat (SGN) sits about 7 km from District 1, and a Grab ride into the center usually costs 110,000–250,000 VND (~$4–9.5) plus a 10,000–15,000 VND gate fee.

International flights arrive at Terminal 2. Walk past the drivers holding signs, follow the Grab pick-up signage, and book from the app — no negotiation needed. Tan Son Nhat is a big building to work out at the end of a long flight; if you land late at night or travel with kids, a greeter service means you are not doing it alone — your host meets you in the arrival hall and walks you to the right counter, from $30 USD per person (Standard arrival). Our Tan Son Nhat airport assistance guide explains when it is worth it — and when it is not — or you can book directly on our airport assistance page.

How Does Money Work in Vietnam?

Vietnam runs on cash and QR payments: the đồng trades at roughly 26,500 VND to $1 USD as of July 2026, and street vendors, small cafés and markets expect VND, not cards.

Cards work fine in hotels, malls and mid-range restaurants. Withdraw from bank-branded ATMs (not standalone machines in tourist streets), and double-check the zeros — the 500,000 VND and 20,000 VND notes are both blue and have caught out more than one of our guests. A useful mental shortcut: knock off four zeros and multiply by 0.4 to get rough dollars.

How Do You Cross the Street in Saigon?

Cross at a steady, predictable pace and the motorbikes will flow around you — the traffic looks like chaos but moves like water. Crossing the street is the real initiation ritual of any first time in Saigon.

“Most first-timers panic about the traffic, but you cross with the flow, not against it,” says Vy, one of our áo dài riders.

The question our riders hear most often on tour is not about food or safety — it is “how do I cross the street?”. Watch a local once, then copy them: no sudden stops, no running, one hand raised if it makes you feel better. For everything else — Metro Line 1, Grab bikes, walking routes — see our guide to getting around Ho Chi Minh City.

Is Saigon Safe for First-Time Visitors?

Saigon is broadly safe: the risks that actually affect tourists are phone snatching and occasional overcharging, not violent crime.

Keep your phone away from the curb when standing on sidewalks, wear bags cross-body on the building side, and use Grab or Xanh SM instead of waving down street taxis. Solo travelers — including solo women — visit in large numbers; we wrote a separate honest answer on whether Saigon is safe for tourists and solo female travelers.

What Should You Eat First in Saigon?

Start with the classics — phở, bánh mì and cà phê sữa đá — all available on the street for under 70,000 VND (~$2.5) each. No first time in Saigon is complete without a meal on a low plastic stool.

Rule of thumb from 100,000+ guests: eat where you see locals sitting on low plastic stools, and go where the turnover is fast. If you want a shortcut on night one, a guided food tour covers 10+ dishes across districts most visitors never reach — compare options in our honest food tour comparison, or ride with our women drivers on the Saigon Food Tour ($59 USD, book now, pay cash after the tour).

What Scams Should First-Time Visitors Watch For?

The common tourist traps during a first time in Saigon are small-money scams: rigged taxi meters, “friendly” shoe repairs you did not ask for, cyclo rides that quote one price and demand another, and coconut vendors handing you a drink then charging tourist rates.

All of them are avoidable with two habits: agree every price before you accept anything, and book transport through an app. Nobody legitimate will put goods in your hands unasked.

FAQ: First Trip to Saigon

How many days do you need in Saigon?

Two to three full days covers the highlights — District 1 landmarks, a food evening, and one half-day trip. Add more if you want day trips outside the city.

Is English widely spoken?

In hotels, tourist restaurants and among younger people, yes. Street vendors often use calculators to show prices — it works fine.

Can you drink tap water?

No — drink bottled or filtered water. Ice in restaurants and cafés is factory-made and generally safe.

What should you wear?

Light, breathable clothes year-round. Cover shoulders and knees for pagodas and temples. December to April is the dry season and the most comfortable time to visit.

Do you need a SIM card?

An eSIM or local SIM makes Grab and maps much easier. Airport counters sell tourist SIMs, or install an eSIM before you fly.
