Vietnam Visa Extension & Overstay 2026: Rules, Fines & Honest Fixes

Short answer: A Vietnam visa extension is limited in 2026 — a standard tourist e-visa…

Short answer: A Vietnam visa extension is limited in 2026 — a standard tourist e-visa cannot be extended from inside the country. To stay longer you either exit and re-enter on a fresh 90-day e-visa, or switch to a sponsored visa you can renew. Overstaying starts at 500,000 VND (~$19) in fines and, past 15 days, risks deportation.

Getting a Vietnam visa extension sounds simple, but the rules changed for 2026 and most travellers get the wrong advice online. We’re KissTour — the Saigon and Da Nang tour company run by 100,000+ guests’ worth of áo dài women riders — and our guests ask about this constantly at the airport. Here’s the honest version: what you can extend, what you can’t, and exactly what an overstay costs now.

Prices below are in VND with a rough US-dollar guide at about 26,000 VND to $1. Rates move, so treat the dollar figures as ballpark.

Can You Get a Vietnam Visa Extension on an E-Visa?

A Vietnam visa extension on a standard tourist e-visa is not possible in 2026. The e-visa (single-entry $25, multiple-entry $50, valid up to 90 days) is issued for one fixed stay and cannot be renewed while you are inside Vietnam. You can apply for a new e-visa online, but it only becomes valid for a future entry — after you have exited the country. In practice, the date on your e-visa is a hard deadline: if it expires on the 1st, you need to be across the border before midnight that day.

What Are the Overstay Fines in Vietnam for 2026?

Overstay fines rose sharply under Decree 282/2025, which took effect on December 15, 2025. Fines now scale with how many days you go over, and longer overstays trigger far more than money.

Days overstayed Fine (VND) Rough USD
1–15 days 500,000 – 2,000,000 ~$19 – $77
16–29 days 3,000,000 – 5,000,000 ~$115 – $192
30–59 days 5,000,000 – 10,000,000 ~$192 – $385

Beyond the fine: overstays of 16 days or more can lead to deportation, and repeated or serious violations can get you blacklisted with a multi-year ban on returning to Vietnam. These deportation rules were tightened under Decree 59/2026, effective April 1, 2026. A single missed day is a paperwork headache; two weeks is a serious problem. Don’t gamble with it.

How Do You Legally Stay Longer in Vietnam?

There are two clean routes when you want more time than your e-visa allows.

1. The visa run (exit and re-enter)

Exit Vietnam by air or land to a neighbour like Cambodia, Laos or Thailand, apply for a fresh 90-day e-visa, and re-enter once it’s approved. This is the most common fix for travellers. It works, but it isn’t automatic — immigration officers have discretion, so leave a buffer of a few days and don’t book same-day return flights before your new e-visa is granted.

2. Switch to a sponsored, extendable visa

If you have a Vietnamese sponsor (a company or an agency acting on your behalf), you can hold a visa type that can be extended in-country using Form NA5 at an immigration office. You’ll need your original passport with at least six months’ validity. Processing typically runs several working days and slows around public holidays, so start early.

What If You Realise You’ll Overstay Right Before Your Flight?

Stay calm and go to the airport early. If you overstay by a short window, you’ll usually settle the fine at the immigration counter on departure before you’re cleared to leave — bring cash and your passport. The one thing that turns a minor fine into a missed flight is arriving late and stressed with immigration paperwork still to sort. Give yourself extra time.

Can KissTour Help You Clear Immigration Faster?

Yes — this is exactly where our airport fast track service helps. A greeter meets you before immigration and walks you through a priority lane, which matters most on a tight departure or a paperwork day. Fast track starts at $30 (~780,000 VND) per passport and covers Tan Son Nhat (SGN), Noi Bai (HAN), Da Nang (DAD) and Phu Quoc (PQC).

“When a guest is worried about timing, the calm of having someone waiting with your name on a sign changes the whole morning,” says Vy, one of our áo dài riders who has seen every kind of last-minute airport panic. You can also pay in cash and book flexibly — if your plan changes and you tell us ahead by message, there’s no risk.

Can I extend my Vietnam e-visa without leaving the country?

No. A Vietnam visa extension is not available for standard tourist e-visas in 2026. You must exit and re-enter on a fresh e-visa, or hold a sponsored visa type that allows an in-country extension.

How much is the fine for overstaying 3 days?

A 1–15 day overstay is fined 500,000–2,000,000 VND (~$19–$77) under Decree 282/2025, usually settled at the airport on departure. Bring cash.

Does a border run always work?

Usually, but not guaranteed — officers have discretion on re-entry. Get your new e-visa approved before you fly back and leave a few days’ buffer.

What happens if I overstay 20 days?

Overstays of 16 days or more carry a 3,000,000–5,000,000 VND fine and can lead to deportation and a potential re-entry ban. Don’t let it reach this point.

Can I fix this at the airport on the way out?

Short overstays are typically resolved at immigration on departure. Arrive early, and consider fast track so a queue doesn’t cost you the flight.
