Lantern boats on the Thu Bon River — Hoi An tour from Da Nang

Da Nang or Hoi An: Where Should You Stay in 2026?

Short answer: Choosing Da Nang or Hoi An comes down to pace. Stay in Da Nang for a modern beach city with big hotels, rooftop bars and an airport 15 minutes away. Choose Hoi An for its lantern-lit UNESCO Old Town and a slower, prettier feel. They sit only ~30 km apart, so plenty of travellers split their nights or day-trip between the two.

Da Nang or Hoi An is the first real decision most people face when planning central Vietnam, and there’s no single right answer — it depends on the trip you want. As a women-led tour team that rides these streets daily, we’ll give you the honest trade-offs, real distances and costs, and when it makes sense to simply do both.

Prices are in VND with a rough guide at about 26,000 VND to $1; rates shift, so the dollar figures are approximate.

Da Nang or Hoi An: Which One Fits Your Trip?

Da Nang is a coastal city of about 1.2 million people with a long beachfront, an international airport, and modern comforts; Hoi An is a small, historic trading town whose Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, best known for lanterns, tailors and riverside walks. If you value convenience, nightlife and big hotels, lean Da Nang. If you value atmosphere, walkability and charm, lean Hoi An.

Who Should Stay in Da Nang?

Da Nang suits travellers who want a beach-city base with everything close by. My Khe Beach runs for kilometres, the airport is roughly 15 minutes from most hotels, and you get rooftop bars, big resorts, the Marble Mountains and easy Grab rides everywhere. It’s the stronger pick for first-timers who like a city buzz, for shorter stays where airport convenience matters, and for anyone who wants to mix beach days with day trips.

Who Should Stay in Hoi An?

Hoi An suits travellers chasing charm over convenience. The Ancient Town glows with lanterns at night, cars are limited in the centre, and the pace is gentle. Families and couples often love the riverside strip a 5–15 minute walk from the Old Town — you get a pool and quiet, and can stroll into the lantern streets without paying for transport. For beach plus character, An Bang Beach is about a 10-minute Grab from the Old Town.

How Far Is Da Nang From Hoi An?

The two are about 30 km apart — roughly a 30–50 minute drive depending on traffic. This short hop is why you don’t always have to choose. Here’s what getting between them costs in 2026.

Option Price Time
Grab car 250,000–350,000 VND (~$10–14) ~40 min
Metered taxi 300,000–450,000 VND (~$12–17) ~40 min
Yellow Bus #1 30,000 VND (~$1.20) 60–90 min
Private transfer 350,000–500,000 VND (~$13–19) ~40 min

Can You Enjoy Both Da Nang and Hoi An in One Trip?

Yes, and most of our guests do. A common plan is to base in one town and day-trip to the other, or split your nights — say three in Da Nang for the beach and airport, two in Hoi An for the Old Town. If you only have limited time, our central Vietnam itinerary lays out how to string Hue, Da Nang and Hoi An together.

“Guests always ask which is better, and I tell them the same thing — Da Nang is where you sleep easy, Hoi An is where you fall in love,” says Vy, one of our áo dài riders. On the back of the bike you feel the switch: the wide beach roads of Da Nang, then the narrow lantern lanes of Hoi An. Our Da Nang By Night tour ($35, ~910,000 VND) is the easiest way to feel both worlds after dark, and you can pay in cash after the ride.

Plan the rest with our local’s guide to things to do in Da Nang, see what the city offers after dark in Da Nang at Night, or map a longer route with our central Vietnam itinerary. For the history, Hoi An Ancient Town is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Is it better to stay in Da Nang or Hoi An for families?

Both work. Da Nang has big resorts and an easy airport; Hoi An families usually pick the riverside strip or An Bang Beach for pools and space rather than the car-limited Old Town centre.

How far is Da Nang from Hoi An?

About 30 km, a 30–50 minute drive. A Grab car runs roughly 250,000–350,000 VND (~$10–14).

Can I do Hoi An as a day trip from Da Nang?

Yes. It’s a short, low-cost hop, so day-tripping either direction is common. Evening is the prettiest time to see Hoi An’s lanterns.

Which has better nightlife, Da Nang or Hoi An?

Da Nang has rooftop bars, the beachfront and a bigger-city buzz; Hoi An’s nights are gentler — night markets, lantern boats and riverside cafés.

How many days do I need for both?

Four to five nights lets you enjoy both without rushing — for example three in Da Nang and two in Hoi An.
