Da Nang to Hue Day Trip (2026): Imperial City, Tickets and the Pass

Honest 2026 planner for a Da Nang to Hue day trip: real ticket prices in…

Is Hue worth a day trip from Da Nang? Yes, for the old imperial capital and the Hai Van Pass in one day. Hue is about 100 km away, roughly 2 hours through the tunnel or 2.5-plus hours over the pass with photo stops. The Imperial City (Citadel) is 200,000 VND (about $7.69 USD) for adults, paid in cash in Vietnamese dong at the gate. On a day trip most people see the Citadel plus one royal tomb, so buying tickets singly (about 350,000 VND / $13.46) beats the combo. Budget a real 10-11 hour door-to-door day.

Every tour page will tell you to buy the big combo ticket and see it all. As Da Nang locals who drive this road for our guests, we will tell you the honest version: on one day you will comfortably see the walled Citadel and one tomb, the combo ticket usually does not pay off, and the drive over the Hai Van Pass is half the reason to go. Here is exactly what it costs, how to spend a day, and when to skip it. Figures checked in August 2026 and may change; conversions use 1 USD ≈ 26,000 VND.

Watch: how to spend a perfect day in Hue — from the KissTour team.

Is one day actually enough for Hue?

One day is enough for the Imperial City and one royal tomb at an unhurried pace, plus a lunch and a river or pagoda stop. It is not enough to see all three famous tombs well.

Door to door this is a long day: pickup around 7:30-8:15 am and back in Da Nang around 6:30-7:00 pm, so plan for 10-11 hours including the two-way drive. The sites themselves close early, roughly 6:30 am to 5:30 pm in summer with ticket sales stopping an hour before, which caps how much you can fit after a late-morning arrival.

Who should skip the day trip and stay overnight instead: anyone who wants all the royal tombs, a slow Perfume River evening, or Hue’s celebrated imperial food scene. And a candid accessibility note that the tour listings bury: the Citadel and tombs have uneven stone paths, gravel and plenty of stairs, so they are hard going for visitors with limited mobility or a stroller. If that is you, a private car with a driver who can drop you close to each gate makes a real difference over a group bus.

How much are the tickets, and is the combo worth it?

The straight answer: buy tickets singly unless you will genuinely see two or more tombs. The combo only saves money once you visit the Citadel plus at least two tombs, which almost no day-tripper does.

Tickets are cash-only in Vietnamese dong at each gate. Cards are not accepted, and there is no ticket machine, so bring dong with you. Here is the real math for a day visit:

What you plan to see Buy singly Combo ticket Lower-cost choice
Citadel only 200,000 VND ($7.69 USD) – Single
Citadel + 1 tomb 350,000 VND ($13.46 USD) 420,000 VND 3-site ($16.15 USD) Single (save ~70,000 VND)
Citadel + 2 tombs 500,000 VND ($19.23 USD) 420,000 VND 3-site ($16.15 USD) Combo (save ~80,000 VND)
Citadel + 3 tombs 650,000 VND ($25.00 USD) 530,000 VND 4-site ($20.38 USD) Combo (save ~120,000 VND)

Individual prices behind the table: the Imperial City is 200,000 VND ($7.69 USD) and each royal tomb (Khai Dinh, Minh Mang or Tu Duc) is 150,000 VND ($5.77 USD). The 3-site combo is the Citadel plus two tombs at 420,000 VND ($16.15 USD); the 4-site combo adds the third tomb at 530,000 VND ($20.38 USD). Both combos are valid for two days, which only helps if you are staying over. Children 7-12 pay 40,000 VND ($1.54 USD) at the Citadel and 30,000 VND each at the tombs; under-7s are free.

Rule of thumb: a day-tripper who sees the Citadel and one tomb should skip the combo and buy the two tickets separately.

If you only have the day: Give your time to one royal tomb, not three. We send first-timers to Khai Dinh – it is compact, and the gold-and-mosaic interior is unlike anything else in Hue, so you get the moment that stays with you without spending the short day driving between sites.

A realistic hour-by-hour day plan

The plan that works is: drive the pass in the cool morning, do the Citadel before the midday heat, eat in Hue, then fit one tomb and a river stop before the drive home.

Time Where What happens
7:45 am Da Nang hotel Pickup; head north for the Hai Van Pass
8:30 am Hai Van Pass summit Photo stop at the old French/US bunkers and the coastal view
9:00 am Lang Co & Lap An Lagoon Quick stop for the turquoise lagoon and beach shots
10:15 am Imperial City (Citadel) Flag Tower, Ngo Mon Gate, Thai Hoa Palace, Forbidden Purple City (about 2 hours)
12:30 pm Central Hue Lunch – Hue is famous for bun bo Hue and banh beo
1:45 pm Thien Mu Pagoda Riverside seven-tier pagoda, a short stop
2:45 pm One royal tomb Khai Dinh (ornate, compact) or Minh Mang (garden, spread out)
4:15 pm Drive back Tunnel to save time, or the pass again for sunset
6:30-7:00 pm Da Nang Back for dinner

Prefer the Perfume River by boat? Swap the Thien Mu stop for a dragon-boat cruise, often with a short set of nha nhac (UNESCO-listed royal court music). It is lovely but eats an hour you will want for a tomb on a tight day.

How do you get there: pass, tunnel, train or tour?

Take the Hai Van Pass on the way up for the scenery and the tunnel on the way back for speed. A private car makes that switch effortless; the train is scenic but rigid on timing.

Option Time each way Rough cost Best for
Private car over the pass 2.5 hrs + stops Private tour ~$46-93 USD/pax by group size Views, flexibility, door-to-door – pair it with the Hai Van Pass
Private car via the tunnel ~2 hrs Same car, faster leg Getting back quickly
Group / SIC tour bus 2-2.5 hrs ~$39-50 USD/pax Lowest cost; fixed stops and pace
Train (coastal line) 3-4 hrs Low; book ahead The famous window views; less schedule freedom

Prices are guides for readers not using their own driver, checked in August 2026. Note motorbikes are banned from the Hai Van Tunnel, so a self-ride always means the pass.

What to see inside the walls, and which tomb to pick

Inside the Citadel, walk the core line: the Flag Tower (Ky Dai), through Ngo Mon Gate to the Thai Hoa Palace throne hall, then into the ruined Forbidden Purple City where only the emperor’s household once lived. That alone is a rewarding two hours.

For your one tomb, the day-trip decision is simple:

  • Choose Khai Dinh if you want maximum wow for minimum walking – a compact hillside tomb with a jaw-dropping mosaic-and-gilt interior, and the closest in style to the drama people picture.
  • Choose Minh Mang if you prefer serene garden-and-lake architecture and do not mind a larger site to stroll.
  • Choose Tu Duc if you like a poet-emperor’s landscaped retreat of pavilions and pine.

All three sit south of the city along the Perfume River, close enough that a driver can reach any one in 20-30 minutes from the Citadel.

What savvy visitors do that first-timers miss. Bring cash in dong for every gate – no cards are accepted. Cover your shoulders and knees; it is enforced at the Citadel, the tombs and the pagodas, so pack a light layer even in heat. Start the Citadel by mid-morning because ticket sales stop about an hour before the ~5:30 pm summer closing. And do not try to cram three tombs into a day trip – you will rush the Citadel and see the tombs through a car window.

Hue or Hoi An as a day trip – and when to skip Hue

Choose Hue for imperial history and a great mountain drive; choose Hoi An for a lantern-lit old town and easy strolling. Hoi An is the softer, shorter day.

Skip the Hue day trip if you only have one spare day and you are not a history person – the payoff is the palaces and tombs, and if those do not pull you, the long drive can feel like a lot of car for the reward. In that case the Hoi An day trip (30-45 minutes away) gives more relaxed hours on the ground. Also skip Hue in the heart of the wet season: Hue is one of the rainiest cities in Vietnam, and its September-to-December rains are heavier and longer than Da Nang’s. Aim for the drier February-to-August window, and see the best time to visit Da Nang for the regional pattern.

Doing it with KissTour

We are honest about this one: KissTour are Da Nang and Saigon specialists, not a Hue mill, so we set you up with a reliable private car and driver over the pass, help you plan the ticket combo (usually: buy singly), and point you to the one tomb worth your short day – rather than herding you through a fixed group route.

Most guests treat Hue as their history day and keep the tastiest part of the trip on our home turf: come back and let us show you Da Nang properly on the Da Nang food tour ($49 USD), or take it easy the next evening on the Da Nang by night tour ($35 USD). Message us and we will arrange the car and the timing.

FAQ: Da Nang to Hue Day Trip

How much does it cost to enter the Imperial City in Hue?

The Hue Imperial City (Citadel) is 200,000 VND, about $7.69 USD, for adults. Children 7-12 pay 40,000 VND and under-7s are free. Payment is cash only, in Vietnamese dong, at the gate.

Can you pay by card at Hue Imperial City?

No. Tickets at the Citadel, the royal tombs and the pagodas are cash only in Vietnamese dong. Cards are not accepted at the gates, so carry enough dong for every site you plan to enter.

What is included in the Hue combo ticket, and is it worth it?

There are two combos: a 3-site ticket (Imperial City plus two tombs) at 420,000 VND, about $16.15 USD, and a 4-site ticket (Imperial City plus all three tombs) at 530,000 VND, about $20.38 USD. Both are valid two days. On a single day trip most people see the Citadel and one tomb, for which buying singly (about 350,000 VND) is lower-cost – the combo only pays off from two tombs onward.

How long does it take to get from Da Nang to Hue?

About 100 km, roughly 2 hours by car through the Hai Van Tunnel or 2.5 hours or more over the Hai Van Pass with photo stops. The coastal train takes about 3-4 hours.

Is it better to go to Hue by train or over the Hai Van Pass?

The pass by car gives you the mountain-and-sea views plus the freedom to stop at Lang Co and Lap An Lagoon; the train is scenic through its window but fixed to the timetable. Many visitors take the pass up and the tunnel back to save time on the return.

Can you see the royal tombs and the Imperial City in one day?

You can comfortably see the Imperial City plus one tomb in a day trip, with time for lunch and a river or pagoda stop. Seeing all three tombs well needs an overnight stay because the sites are spread out and close around 5:30 pm in summer.

Which royal tomb in Hue is the best to visit?

For a day trip, Khai Dinh gives the most impact for the least walking, with an ornate mosaic-and-gilt interior. Minh Mang suits those who prefer garden-and-lake grounds, and Tu Duc is a landscaped poet-emperor’s retreat. Any one is a 20-30 minute drive from the Citadel.

What should I wear to visit the Hue Citadel and tombs?

Cover your shoulders and knees. Modest dress is expected and enforced at the Citadel, the royal tombs and the pagodas, so bring a light layer or scarf even in hot weather, plus comfortable shoes for uneven stone paths and stairs.

Is Hue worth visiting as a day trip from Da Nang?

Yes, if you want imperial history and the Hai Van Pass drive in one day. Skip it if you are not a history person and only have one spare day – a Hoi An day trip is shorter and more relaxed – or if you are visiting during Hue’s heavy September-to-December rains.
