Water puppets performing on water at a Hanoi theatre in the evening

Hanoi Water Puppet Show 2026: Tickets, Times and Is It Worth It?

Short answer: The classic Hanoi water puppet show is at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre…

Short answer: The classic Hanoi water puppet show is at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre beside Hoan Kiem Lake. Tickets cost 100,000–200,000 VND, a show lasts about 50 minutes, and there are several performances a day. It is worth one hour of your trip — book weekend evenings a few days ahead.

A water puppet show is one of the few things in Hanoi that exists almost nowhere else. Wooden puppets glide, splash and fight across a pool of water while a live band plays traditional music at the side. This guide covers tickets, show times, which seats to pick, and an honest answer to whether it is worth your evening.

What Is a Water Puppet Show?

Audience watching a water puppet show in Hanoi

A water puppet show is a traditional Vietnamese performance in which lacquered wooden puppets are moved across a water stage by puppeteers hidden behind a bamboo screen, standing waist-deep in the pool. The art form, water puppetry, is traced back to villages of the Red River Delta around the 11th century, during the Ly dynasty.

It began in flooded rice fields and village ponds, performed at festivals after the harvest. The short scenes still show that world: farmers planting rice, fishermen with nets, buffalo, ducks, dragons, and a cheeky narrator figure called Teu. Vietnam is preparing a nomination for water puppetry to UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

Where Is the Best Water Puppet Show in Hanoi?

The best-known water puppet show in Hanoi is at Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, 57B Dinh Tien Hoang Street, on the north-east corner of Hoan Kiem Lake. It is the easiest to reach, runs the most performances, and is the theatre most travellers mean when they say “the water puppets”.

Because it sits on the edge of the Old Quarter, it fits neatly into an evening: a show at 18:30, then dinner and the lake afterwards. On Friday to Sunday evenings, the streets around the lake close to traffic from 19:00, which makes the walk out of the theatre far more pleasant.

How Much Are Water Puppet Show Tickets in 2026?

Tickets for the Thang Long water puppet show cost 100,000, 150,000 or 200,000 VND in 2026, depending on the seat. Prices were checked in September 2026 and converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 USD.

Seat category Price Worth it?
Top category, front and middle rows 200,000 VND (~$7.70 USD) Yes, for the clearest view of the water
Middle category 150,000 VND (~$5.80 USD) Good value
Lower category, rear and sides 100,000 VND (~$3.80 USD) Fine for children who cannot sit still anyway

The theatre is small, so even the lower category is not far from the stage. The difference is mostly angle: from the front you see the puppets skim and splash; from the back you see more heads.

What Time Is the Water Puppet Show?

Water puppet theatre near Hanoi's Old Quarter

The Thang Long theatre runs roughly seven water puppet show performances a day, and eight on Sundays. Afternoon shows start from about 15:00, and the evening shows around 18:30 and 20:00 are the most popular. Sunday adds a morning show at 09:30.

The theatre publishes its schedule weekly, and times shift occasionally, so check the week you travel. Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon shows often sell out two or three days ahead. Weekday afternoon shows usually have seats on the day.

What Happens During the Show?

A Thang Long water puppet show is a sequence of about 18 short scenes over 50 minutes, each lasting a few minutes. There is no single story to follow, which is why it works even if you speak no Vietnamese.

A small live orchestra sits to one side, playing traditional instruments — drums, bamboo flutes, the single-string dan bau — and singing in a northern folk style. Scenes move from village life to legend: rice planting, a fishing contest, a fox stealing ducks, dancing dragons and phoenixes, and the story of the sword returned to the turtle of Hoan Kiem Lake, just outside the door.

At the end, the screen lifts and the puppeteers step out, wet to the waist. For many people, that moment is the highlight: you finally see how much work those 50 minutes took.

Is a Water Puppet Show Worth It?

A water puppet show is worth it for most travellers as a one-hour cultural experience that exists almost nowhere else. It is not a gripping piece of theatre, and it is unapologetically aimed at visitors — go with that expectation and you will enjoy it.

Go if Skip if
You like traditional music and folk art You dislike anything built for tourists
You are travelling with children You struggle with small, warm, full rooms
You want an easy evening activity by the lake You expect a story with dialogue to follow
You are in Hanoi for two nights or more You only have one evening and want street food instead

Two honest warnings. The room is compact and can feel warm in summer. And some people doze off in the middle — 18 scenes is a lot of short, similar pieces if you are jet-lagged. An afternoon show is the cure for both.

Is the Water Puppet Show Good for Kids?

Yes. The water puppet show is one of the best things to do in Hanoi with children: it is short, visual, musical, and full of splashing animals and dragons. Younger kids who cannot follow a story still love the dancing dragons.

Pick an afternoon show for small children, and seats near the aisle if you may need a quick exit. If your family is also travelling south, the same art form is performed in Ho Chi Minh City — our Saigon with kids guide covers it along with the rest of a family day there.

Tips for Seeing a Water Puppet Show in Hanoi

  • Book ahead for weekends: buy at the box office on arrival in Hanoi, or through the theatre’s own booking page, for Saturday and Sunday evenings.
  • Arrive 15 minutes early: seats are assigned, but the entrance is narrow and the lobby gets busy.
  • Read the programme: if an English scene list is available, it explains each piece and makes the 50 minutes far more interesting.
  • Pair it with the lake: Hoan Kiem Lake and the Old Quarter are steps away — the natural before-or-after walk.
