A mountain pass on the Ha Giang Loop, northern Vietnam

Ha Giang Loop 2026: The Honest Guide to Days, Costs and Safety

Short answer: The Ha Giang loop is a roughly 350 km mountain ride in Vietnam’s far north, usually done in three or four days. In 2026 it costs about $90–130 USD riding yourself or $170–220 USD with an easy rider. Without a valid motorbike licence, ride as a passenger.

The Ha Giang loop is the road trip travellers talk about for years afterwards. Think limestone peaks, the Ma Pi Leng Pass above the Nho Que River, and villages where the market is still the week’s main event. It is also the place where a lot of first-time riders get hurt. This guide is the honest version — days, costs, paperwork, route and timing.

What Is the Ha Giang Loop?

The Ha Giang loop is a circular route of about 350 km that starts and ends in Ha Giang city, climbing onto the Dong Van Karst Plateau near the Chinese border. Most of it runs through the Dong Van Karst Plateau UNESCO Global Geopark, recognised in 2010 and covering 2,356 km² across Quan Ba, Yen Minh, Dong Van and Meo Vac.

One thing has changed on paper: since July 1, 2025, Ha Giang is no longer its own province. It merged into Tuyen Quang province in Vietnam’s 2025 provincial reorganisation. The roads, passes and villages are exactly where they were, and everyone still calls it the Ha Giang loop — but you may see “Tuyen Quang” on new maps and signs.

The kilometre count is misleading. Daily distances of 100–150 km sound easy until you meet the switchbacks, the trucks and the weather, which can turn in twenty minutes.

How Many Days Do You Need for the Ha Giang Loop?

Winding mountain roads in Ha Giang province

Four days is the right length for the Ha Giang loop; three is the minimum, and two is a rush that puts you on mountain roads after dark. Add a night in Ha Giang city before you start if you arrive on the overnight bus.

Day Route Highlights
1 Ha Giang city → Quan Ba → Yen Minh Heaven Gate viewpoint, Twin Mountains, pine forest
2 Yen Minh → Dong Van (+ Lung Cu) Karst valleys, Lung Cu Flag Tower at the northern tip
3 Dong Van → Ma Pi Leng → Meo Vac Ma Pi Leng Pass, Nho Que River boat
4 Meo Vac → Du Gia or direct → Ha Giang city Quieter back roads, rice valleys

The three-day version drops the Du Gia detour and makes day three long. It works in dry weather. In rain or fog, it is the day people wish they had split.

How Much Does the Ha Giang Loop Cost in 2026?

A three-day Ha Giang loop costs roughly $90–130 USD per person riding yourself, $150–240 USD self-riding with a guide, and $170–220 USD with an easy rider. These are market ranges from local operators in 2026 and usually include bike, fuel, homestays and most meals.

Style 3-day cost per person Licence needed? Who it suits
DIY self-ride About $90–130 USD Yes Experienced riders with the right paperwork
Self-ride with a guide About $150–240 USD Yes Confident riders who want route and homestay handled
Easy rider (you ride pillion) About $170–220 USD No Everyone else

Extra costs to budget for:

  • Sleeper bus from Hanoi, one way: 200,000–280,000 VND (~$8–11 USD) at the bus station, or $12–25 USD booked through an agent with hotel pickup.
  • Nho Que River boat: 150,000 VND (~$5.80 USD) per adult since April 13, 2026, now including the shuttle and insurance; 80,000 VND for children under 1.2 m.
  • Lung Cu Flag Tower: around 20,000–40,000 VND — sources disagree, so bring cash.
  • Ma Pi Leng Skywalk platform: a separate small fee; the road itself is free.
  • Border area permit: about $10 USD, usually arranged by your rental shop or tour company.

Prices converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 USD, checked September 2026. The gap between riding yourself and an easy rider is only about $80–90 USD over three days — worth keeping in mind for the next section.

Do You Need a Licence to Ride the Ha Giang Loop?

Karst peaks and valleys in Ha Giang

Yes. To ride the Ha Giang loop yourself legally you need a valid motorbike licence from home plus an International Driving Permit that covers motorbikes. Police checkpoints on the loop have become more frequent since 2025, and foreign riders are checked more often than locals.

Vietnam recognises IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. The United States is not a party to that convention, so American travellers have no simple legal route to ride themselves as tourists. Riders from countries that issue 1968 IDPs — the UK and Australia among them — still need the motorbike category on both the permit and the home licence.

The fine is the small problem. The bigger one is insurance: most travel policies refuse claims from unlicensed riders, and a crash on a mountain road near the border is exactly the claim you do not want refused. Our Vietnam traffic safety guide covers the rules for the rest of the country.

The border area permit is separate from your licence. It is required for foreigners entering the border districts, costs around $10 USD, and checkpoints began asking for it again in June 2026. Let your rental shop or tour company sort it before you set off.

Is the Ha Giang Loop Safe?

The Ha Giang loop is safe for passengers with a professional rider and risky for inexperienced self-riders. Most accidents involve travellers who learned to ride that week: blind bends, gravel, trucks cutting corners, and fog on the passes.

Riding behind a professional is not the lesser version. At KissTour every guest rides as a passenger behind one of our riders. That is how we have run motorbike tours in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang for years, and what we see is simple: people who are not steering look up. They see the valley instead of the next pothole. On a road like Ma Pi Leng, that is most of the point.

If you do ride yourself, keep to three rules. Stop riding before dark. Stay off the loop in heavy rain, when landslides close roads. And go slower than the group — the pass will still be there. Our guide to how safe motorbike tours are explains what a good operator checks: helmets that fit, bikes that are serviced, and riders who have done the road hundreds of times.

What Are the Best Stops on the Ha Giang Loop?

Five stops make the Ha Giang loop: Heaven Gate at Quan Ba, Lung Cu Flag Tower, Dong Van old town, the Ma Pi Leng Pass and a boat on the Nho Que River. Everything else is road between them — which is also the best part.

  • Heaven Gate (Quan Ba): the first big viewpoint, over a valley with two rounded hills locals call the Twin Mountains.
  • Lung Cu Flag Tower: near Vietnam’s northernmost point, with a climb of a few hundred steps to the flag.
  • Dong Van old town: an overnight stop with old houses and a Sunday market that draws villagers from across the plateau.
  • Ma Pi Leng Pass: the famous stretch, cut into the cliff high above the river. Pull fully off the road for photos — trucks use every centimetre.
  • Nho Que River boat: 60–90 minutes on the jade-green river through the Tu San canyon, 150,000 VND per adult.

When Is the Best Time to Ride the Ha Giang Loop?

The best time to ride the Ha Giang loop is late September to November: dry roads, clear air, and buckwheat flowers turning the plateau pink from late October. March to May is the second window, mild and green.

Months What you get Verdict
Mid-September – mid-October Golden rice harvest (best at Hoang Su Phi, west of the loop), 15–25 °C Excellent
Late October – November Buckwheat flowers in bloom, dry and clear Peak season, busiest
December – February Cold on the plateau, fog, fewer people Possible with real layers
March – May Plum and peach blossom, mild Very good, quieter
June – August Heavy rain, landslide risk Ride only with flexible dates

Avoid Tet week unless you want homestays closed and buses full — in 2027, Lunar New Year falls on February 6. Our Vietnam weather guide has the national picture, and what to wear in Vietnam covers layering for the mountains.

How Do You Get to the Ha Giang Loop From Hanoi?

The usual way is an overnight sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang city, about 6.5 to 8 hours, for 200,000–280,000 VND (~$8–11 USD) at the station. Buses leave in the evening and arrive before dawn, and many loop operators will let you rest until the morning briefing.

Daytime limousine vans take a similar time and let you see the road in. Either way, plan a buffer day in Hanoi before or after — the loop does not forgive a tight flight connection. Landing in Hanoi from abroad? Our guide to arriving at Noi Bai Airport covers the first hour, and a Noi Bai fast track from $30 USD per person (Standard) gets you through immigration first.
