Short answer: Ban Gioc Waterfall is Vietnam’s widest waterfall, about 300 m across on the Chinese border, and it is worth the trip only with two or three days to spare. It sits roughly 8–10 hours from Hanoi by road. Go from August to October, when the water is high and the rice is gold.
Ban Gioc Waterfall is the widest waterfall in Vietnam and one of the hardest to reach. It sits in Cao Bang, in the far north-east, where the Quay Son River drops over limestone tiers into a turquoise pool shared with China. This guide covers what it costs, how to get there, when the water is worth the journey, and who should skip it.
What Is Ban Gioc Waterfall?
Ban Gioc Waterfall is a multi-tiered waterfall on the Quay Son River, about 300 m wide and around 30 m high, straddling the border between Vietnam and China. The Chinese side calls it Detian. Measurements vary between sources, but it is consistently described as the widest waterfall in Vietnam.
What makes Ban Gioc Waterfall different from most is the setting. There are no hotels at the edge, no cable cars, no concrete viewing towers — just rice fields, karst hills and bamboo rafts. You can see the Chinese viewing platforms across the pool, but you cannot cross; the border runs down the river.
How Do You Get to Ban Gioc Waterfall From Hanoi?

You get to Ban Gioc Waterfall from Hanoi in two legs: a bus of 6–9 hours to Cao Bang city, 282 km north, then about two more hours by road to the falls. Most travellers take an overnight sleeper bus to Cao Bang, rest, and visit the waterfall the next day.
| Option | Time | Worth it if |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight sleeper bus to Cao Bang, then local transport | 6–9 hours + about 2 hours | You want to save a day and a hotel night |
| Daytime limousine van to Cao Bang | About 6–7 hours + about 2 hours | You want to see the road and sleep properly |
| Private car with driver, 2–3 days | Flexible | You are a family or want Nguom Ngao and viewpoints on the way |
| Combine with the Ha Giang loop | 1–2 extra days | You are already in the far north |
A same-day return from Hanoi is not realistic: it would mean 16 or more hours in a vehicle for an hour at the falls. Two nights is the sensible minimum; three lets you add Nguom Ngao Cave and the Cao Bang countryside without rushing.
Flying into Hanoi first? Our guide to arriving at Noi Bai Airport covers the first hour, and a Noi Bai fast track from $30 USD per person (Standard) gets you through immigration first — useful if you are catching an afternoon bus north.
How Much Does Ban Gioc Waterfall Cost in 2026?
Ban Gioc Waterfall is inexpensive once you are there: the entrance ticket is 45,000 VND (~$1.70 USD). Prices below were checked in September 2026 and converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 USD.
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Ban Gioc Waterfall entrance | 45,000 VND (~$1.70 USD) |
| Bamboo raft to the base of the falls, short ride | Around 50,000 VND (~$1.90 USD) per person |
| Nguom Ngao Cave, self-guided (about 1 km, 45 minutes) | 45,000 VND (~$1.70 USD) |
| Nguom Ngao Cave with a local guide | 190,000 VND (~$7.30 USD) |
Raft prices are quoted differently by different sources — some list around 100,000–150,000 VND per raft shared between passengers — so confirm at the jetty. Bring cash: ATMs are scarce near the border and card payment is rare.
When Is the Best Time to See Ban Gioc Waterfall?

The best time to see Ban Gioc Waterfall is August to October. The rainy season fills the river, the falls run across their full width, and from mid-September the surrounding rice turns gold. Roads are also more stable than at the height of the summer storms.
| Months | Water | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| June – July | High, sometimes brown after storms | Powerful, but road and landslide risk |
| August – October | High and clearer, full width | Best overall, gold rice from mid-September |
| November – February | Lower, clear turquoise | Calm and photogenic, cold mornings |
| March – May | Lowest, falls may not span the full width | Quiet, least dramatic |
If the thundering version is what you want, do not go in spring. If you prefer blue water and fewer people, the cool months can be lovely. Our Vietnam weather guide has the national picture.
What Else Is There to See Near Ban Gioc?
The main side trip from Ban Gioc Waterfall is Nguom Ngao Cave, a few kilometres away, with a lit 1 km route through stalactite chambers. Beyond that, Cao Bang is less about sights and more about the drive: karst valleys, rice terraces and very few other travellers.
- Nguom Ngao Cave: 45,000 VND self-guided or 190,000 VND with a guide; about 45 minutes on the short route.
- Countryside viewpoints: the road between Cao Bang city and the falls climbs through valleys that are worth stopping for, especially at harvest.
- Rice fields at the falls: the paddies right in front of Ban Gioc are part of the view — walk the edges in the late afternoon.
Cao Bang has kept its tourism small. That is the reason to come, and the reason to plan accommodation and transport before you arrive rather than on the day.
Is Ban Gioc Waterfall Worth It?
Ban Gioc Waterfall is worth it if you have at least a week in the north and like remote places. It is not worth it on a five-day trip that also includes Hanoi, Ninh Binh and a bay cruise. The falls are extraordinary. The travel time is the cost.
| Go if | Skip if |
|---|---|
| You have 7+ days in northern Vietnam | You have 5 days or fewer in the north |
| You are already doing the Ha Giang loop | Long bus journeys make you miserable |
| You like places with few other tourists | You want nightlife and restaurants |
| You can travel August to October | You can only go in March to May |
