Short answer: Pu Luong is a nature reserve of rice terraces, stilt villages and forested limestone in Thanh Hoa, about 4–5 hours from Hanoi. It is quieter than Sapa and wilder than Mai Chau. Stay two or three nights in a homestay, and go in late May–June or September–October for the terraces.
Pu Luong is the answer for travellers who want the terraces of Sapa without the crowds. The reserve has no town to speak of, no cable car and very few tour buses — just valleys, bamboo water wheels, waterfalls and homestays tucked into the hillsides. This guide covers how to get there, where to stay, what it costs in 2026 and who it suits.
What Is Pu Luong Like?
Pu Luong is a protected nature reserve in the mountains of Thanh Hoa province, where rice terraces climb the valley sides below forested limestone ridges. The villages belong mainly to Thai and Muong communities, living in wooden stilt houses surrounded by paddies.
The appeal is space and silence. Days are spent walking between villages, swimming under a waterfall, and watching the fields from a homestay deck. There is little to “do” in the checklist sense, and that is the point. If Sapa feels too busy and Mai Chau too tame, this valley sits in between.
How Do You Get to Pu Luong From Hanoi?

The easiest way to get to Pu Luong from Hanoi is a limousine van, about 4–5 hours for roughly 230,000–350,000 VND (~$9–13.50 USD) one way, with hotel pickup. Vans leave Hanoi between about 06:30 and 11:00 and drop you at, or near, your homestay.
| Option | Time | Price | Worth it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limousine van, hotel pickup | 4–5 hours | 230,000–350,000 VND | You want the simplest door-to-door trip |
| Private car with driver | About 4 hours | Quote on request | You are a family or want to stop in Mai Chau |
| Via Mai Chau, overnight stop | Split over 2 days | Van fares for both legs | You want to see both valleys |
The road passes close to Mai Chau, so many travellers combine the two: a night in the flat Mai Chau valley, then on to the steeper terraces of Pu Luong. Distances within the reserve are real — homestays can be 30 minutes apart on narrow roads — so ask yours to arrange the last leg.

Where Should You Stay in Pu Luong?
You stay in a homestay or small eco-resort here; there are no big hotels. Rooms range from about 300,000 VND for a simple homestay to around 1,500,000 VND for a bungalow with a view, and boutique resorts with pools cost roughly $50–120 USD a night.
| Type | What you get | Price per room per night |
|---|---|---|
| Village homestay | Stilt house, shared bathroom, family dinner | From about 300,000 VND (~$11.50 USD) |
| Bungalow homestay | Private room and bathroom, terrace view | About 600,000–1,500,000 VND (~$23–58 USD) |
| Eco-resort | Pool, restaurant, bigger rooms | About $50–120 USD |
Location matters more than room type. A homestay with a view over the terraces is the whole experience; one on the main road is just a bed. Check the map before you book, and ask whether meals are included — in most of the reserve, your homestay kitchen is the only restaurant nearby.
What Is There to Do in Pu Luong?

The main things to do in Pu Luong are trekking between villages, seeing the bamboo water wheels, swimming at Hieu Waterfall and visiting Kho Muong. There is no general entrance fee to the reserve; a few spots charge a small fee of about 10,000–20,000 VND.
- Trek the terraces: village-to-village walks of a few hours through rice fields and bamboo, best with a local guide your homestay can arrange.
- Bamboo water wheels: giant wooden wheels on the Cham River lift water into bamboo pipes to irrigate the fields — a rare sight, and a good cycle or short ride away.
- Hieu Waterfall: a series of cascades with natural pools where you can swim; small fee at the entrance.
- Kho Muong: a village ringed by mountains, with a large cave known locally as the Bat Cave.
- Don village: an S-shaped road through the fields that has become the most photographed view in Pu Luong; free.
Plan one or two of these a day at most. The roads are slow, and the best part of the trip is often the hour you spend doing nothing on the homestay deck at sunset.

Pu Luong vs Sapa vs Mai Chau: Which Should You Choose?
Choose Pu Luong for quiet terraces and nature, Sapa for serious trekking and big mountains, and Mai Chau for the easiest, flattest countryside stay close to Hanoi.
| Pu Luong | Sapa | Mai Chau | |
|---|---|---|---|
| From Hanoi | 4–5 hours | 5.5–6 hours | 3–4 hours |
| Terrain | Terraces, forest, limestone | High mountains, steep terraces | Flat valley |
| Crowds | Low | High | Moderate |
| Accommodation | Homestays, eco-resorts | Hotels, homestays | Homestays, ecolodge |
| Best for | Nature lovers, slow travellers | Keen trekkers | Families, first-timers |
Who Is Pu Luong Not For?
The reserve is not for travellers who want nightlife, restaurants to choose from or easy independent transport. Homestays are spread out, there are few ATMs, and getting between sights needs a driver, a motorbike taxi or your homestay’s help.
Bring enough cash for your stay, a torch, insect repellent and shoes with grip. If that list sounds like an adventure, you will love it. If it sounds like hard work, Mai Chau gives you a gentler version of the same countryside.
