Cat Ba Island 2026: How to Get There, What to Do and How Long to Stay

Short answer: Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay area…

Short answer: Cat Ba Island is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay area and the best base for Lan Ha Bay. It is about 3–3.5 hours from Hanoi by bus and cable car for 325,000–450,000 VND. Stay two nights: one day on a Lan Ha boat, one in the national park or on the beach.

Cat Ba Island is where you go when you want the karst bays without spending your whole stay on a cruise boat. The town is lively, the national park covers much of the island, and Lan Ha Bay — quieter than Ha Long — starts at the harbour. This guide covers getting there, what to do, what it costs in 2026 and how long to stay.

What Is Cat Ba Island Like?

Cat Ba Island is a large, hilly island at the southern edge of Ha Long Bay, with a busy harbour town on one side and forest-covered national park across much of the rest. It sits inside the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage site, extended to include Cat Ba in 2023.

Cat Ba town is not a quiet fishing village any more. The seafront is lined with hotels, seafood restaurants and bars, and weekends in summer are busy with domestic visitors. The reason to come is what surrounds the town: Lan Ha Bay’s floating villages and lagoons, jungle trails, and small beaches tucked between cliffs.

How Do You Get to Cat Ba Island From Hanoi?

Karst cliffs and water near Cat Ba Island

The easiest way to get to Cat Ba Island from Hanoi is a combo ticket: bus to the coast, then cable car or boat across. It takes about 3–3.5 hours in total and costs 325,000–450,000 VND (~$12.50–17.30 USD) with hotel pickup.

Crossing Time Notes
Cable car (Cat Hai – Phu Long) 10–15 minutes over about 3.9 km About 70,000 VND one way; runs roughly 08:30–15:45
Speedboat 5–7 minutes Usually part of the combo
Car ferry 25–35 minutes Used by vehicles and later buses

Mind the cable car hours. It stops around 15:45, so afternoon buses switch to the boat or ferry, and the last crossings of the day fill up in summer. Standard buses start from about $10.50 USD, VIP limousine vans about $15–17 USD.

Arriving from abroad? Our guide to arriving at Noi Bai Airport covers the first hour in Hanoi, and a Noi Bai fast track from $30 USD per person (Standard) gets you through immigration first.

What Is There to Do on Cat Ba Island?

The best thing to do on Cat Ba Island is a day on Lan Ha Bay by boat and kayak. After that, pick between the national park, the beaches and the island’s wartime history, depending on how active you feel.

  • Lan Ha Bay boat day: boats leave from Ben Beo harbour near town, visiting floating fishing villages, lagoons and small beaches, usually with kayaking. The Lan Ha fee is roughly 120,000 VND, paid at the harbour.
  • Cat Ba National Park: forest trails and a summit viewpoint, open 07:00–17:00, 60,000–80,000 VND. It is home to the Cat Ba langur, one of the rarest primates in the world — sightings are rare, but the park exists largely to protect it.
  • Hospital Cave: a wartime hospital built inside a limestone hill, 40,000 VND. Short, interesting, and a good rainy-hour option.
  • Cat Co beaches: three small beaches, Cat Co 1, 2 and 3, a short walk or ride from town. Fine for a swim; not the reason to come.
  • Cannon Fort: a hilltop viewpoint over town and the bay. Several 2026 sources report it closed to visitors, so check locally before walking up.

How Much Does Cat Ba Island Cost in 2026?

Boats in the bay around Cat Ba Island

Cat Ba Island costs little beyond transport and your boat day. Prices below were checked in September 2026 and converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 USD.

Item Price
Hanoi – Cat Ba combo (bus + crossing), one way 325,000–450,000 VND (~$12.50–17.30 USD)
Cable car only, one way About 70,000 VND (~$2.70 USD)
Lan Ha Bay fee Roughly 120,000 VND (~$4.60 USD)
Cat Ba National Park 60,000–80,000 VND (~$2.30–3.10 USD)
Hospital Cave 40,000 VND (~$1.50 USD)

Lan Ha boat days are sold by nearly every hotel and agency in town, at a wide range of prices and group sizes. Ask how many people are on the boat, whether kayaks and the bay fee are included, and how much of the day is on the water — those three answers explain most of the price differences.

Is Cat Ba Island Better Than a Ha Long Bay Cruise?

Cat Ba Island is better if you want flexibility, land-based activities and lower costs; an overnight cruise is better if you want to sleep on the water and see the bay with no effort. They suit different travellers rather than one beating the other.

Cat Ba Island base Overnight cruise
Sleep Hotel or homestay in town Cabin on the boat
Bay time A full day on a Lan Ha boat Afternoon, sunset and morning
Other activities National park, beaches, caves, cafés Mostly on board
Cost Lower, pay as you go Roughly $145–200 USD mid-range, all-in
Best for Independent and active travellers Short trips, couples, families wanting ease

When Is the Best Time to Visit Cat Ba Island?

The best time to visit Cat Ba Island is late September to November, when the sea is calmer, the air is clearer and the summer crowds have gone. April to June is also good, warm enough to swim with fewer storms.

July and August are peak domestic season: hot, busy, and inside the typhoon season that runs from late May to early November. Boats do not sail when the port authority closes the water, so keep a spare day. December to February is cool and often grey — fine for walking, poor for swimming. Our Vietnam weather guide has the month-by-month view.

How Many Nights Do You Need on Cat Ba Island?

Two nights is right for Cat Ba Island: one full day on Lan Ha Bay and one for the national park, a beach or simply slowing down. One night leaves you only a half day, because the journey eats both ends.

Three nights suits travellers who want to add climbing, a second boat route or a proper rest between busier stops. Planning the bigger picture? Our guide to how many days you need in Vietnam shows how the island fits alongside Hanoi and the south.
