Short answer: Mai Chau is a flat, green valley of rice fields and White Thai stilt villages about 140 km from Hanoi, 3–4 hours by road. Stay one or two nights in Lac or Pom Coong, cycle the paddies, and go in March–April or September–October. Homestays start around 200,000 VND a night.
Mai Chau is the northern trip for people who want the countryside without the long haul. It has no famous summit and no cruise, just a wide valley, bicycles, stilt houses and slow evenings. This guide covers how to get there, where to stay, what it costs in 2026, and who will love it — and who will not.
What Is Mai Chau Like?
Mai Chau is a valley floor of rice paddies ringed by forested hills, home mainly to White Thai communities who live in wooden houses raised on stilts. It is flat, which makes it one of the few places in the northern mountains you can explore easily by bicycle.
The pace is the attraction. Days are spent cycling between villages, watching the fields, eating dinner with the family you are staying with, and sleeping on a mattress under a mosquito net in a house built on posts. It is quieter and less dramatic than Sapa, and much easier to reach.
One thing has changed on paper. Mai Chau used to be in Hoa Binh province; since the 2025 provincial reorganisation, Hoa Binh has merged into Phu Tho province, and Mai Chau is now a commune of Phu Tho. The valley is exactly the same — you may just see the new name on maps.
How Do You Get to Mai Chau From Hanoi?

The easiest way to get to Mai Chau from Hanoi is a limousine van, about 2.5 to 3.5 hours for roughly 140,000–350,000 VND (~$5.40–13.50 USD) depending on the operator. The public bus from My Dinh station is slower but costs only 70,000–150,000 VND.
| Option | Time | Price | Worth it if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limousine van, hotel pickup | 2.5–3.5 hours | 140,000–350,000 VND | You want comfort and door-to-door |
| Public bus from My Dinh | 3.5–4 hours | 70,000–150,000 VND | Budget is the priority |
| Private car with driver | About 3 hours | Quote on request | You are a family or small group |
Public buses leave My Dinh several times a day, commonly around 06:00, 07:30, 14:00 and 14:30. The last hour climbs over a pass and drops into the valley. The first view down onto the paddies is one of the best moments of the trip.
Flying into Hanoi first? Our guide to arriving at Noi Bai Airport covers the first hour, and a Noi Bai fast track from $30 USD per person (Standard) gets you through immigration first.
Where Should You Stay in Mai Chau?
Stay in Pom Coong if you want the quieter village, Lac if you want more cafés and choice, or an ecolodge on the valley edge if you want a pool and a proper bathroom. All three are within a short cycle of each other.
| Where | Feel | Price per night |
|---|---|---|
| Pom Coong homestay, shared floor | Quietest village, stilt house, family dinner | From about 200,000 VND (~$8 USD) per person |
| Pom Coong or Lac, private room | Same houses, your own room | About 550,000–590,000 VND (~$21–23 USD) for two, breakfast included |
| Lac village | Busiest village, more cafés and shops | Similar to Pom Coong, wider choice |
| Ecolodge or resort | Pool, views, hotel comforts | From about $80–125 USD |
In a traditional homestay you usually sleep on a mattress on the upper floor of the stilt house, with curtains and a mosquito net rather than walls. Bathrooms are shared and on the ground floor. If that sounds like the point of the trip, book a homestay. If it sounds like a bad night’s sleep, book a private room or the ecolodge — there is no shame in either.
Ask whether dinner is included. A family dinner is often the best meal of the trip and usually costs only a few dollars extra — around $5–7 USD at the simpler places.
What Is There to Do in Mai Chau?

The main thing to do in Mai Chau is cycle. Bicycles rent for about 50,000 VND (~$1.90 USD) a day, and flat paths link the villages through the paddies in every direction.
- Cycle the valley loop: Lac, Pom Coong and the smaller hamlets beyond, on paths between the fields. Half a day at an easy pace.
- Walk to a waterfall: Go Lao waterfall sits a short ride from the valley and makes a good cool-off in the hot months.
- Climb to a viewpoint: the hills around the valley have paths and a cave above the fields; the view back over the paddies is worth the stairs.
- Watch weaving: White Thai women weave on looms under the stilt houses, and brocade scarves and bags are sold in Lac.
- Stay for the evening: some homestays host a small music and dance performance, and sunset over the fields is the quiet highlight.
Be ready for how commercial Lac has become. The main lanes are lined with souvenir stalls. Five minutes’ cycling in any direction, the valley goes quiet again.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Mai Chau?
The best time to visit Mai Chau is March to April and September to early October, when the weather is mild and the fields are either bright green or turning gold. Mai Chau has two rice crops a year, so the valley is rarely bare for long.
| Months | Fields | Weather |
|---|---|---|
| March – April | Young green rice | Mild, little rain — very good |
| May – early June | First harvest, gold | Warming up |
| Late June – August | Second crop, vivid green | Hot, around 33 °C highs, heavy rain |
| September – early October | Second harvest, gold | Cooling, drier — very good |
| November – February | Bare or fallow fields | Cool and dry, sometimes cold at night |
If rice fields are the reason you are going, the two harvest windows are the ones to aim for. Our Vietnam weather guide has the national picture, and our packing list covers the warm layer you will want on winter evenings.
How Many Nights Do You Need in Mai Chau?
One night is enough to see Mai Chau; two nights let you feel it. With one night you arrive at lunch, cycle in the afternoon, stay for dinner and leave after breakfast. With two you get a full, unhurried day in the middle.
A day trip from Hanoi is possible but not worth it: six to seven hours on the road for a few hours in the valley. If you only have one day, Ninh Binh is the better choice from Hanoi.
Is Mai Chau or Sapa Better?
Mai Chau is better for an easy, restful countryside stay; Sapa is better for real trekking and mountain scenery. The difference is effort.
| Mai Chau | Sapa | |
|---|---|---|
| From Hanoi | 3–4 hours | 5.5–6 hours |
| Terrain | Flat valley | Steep terraces, high mountains |
| Main activity | Cycling, homestay life | Trekking |
| Nights needed | 1–2 | 2–3 |
| Crowds | Moderate, mostly in Lac | Heavy in town and at Cat Cat |
| Best for | Families, slow travellers, first-timers | Walkers who want a challenge |
Travelling with children or grandparents, or tired after a busy Hanoi stretch? Mai Chau. Want to walk all day and see the big terraces? Sapa.
Who Is Mai Chau Not For?
Mai Chau is not for travellers who want nightlife, dramatic peaks or a packed itinerary. Evenings are quiet, most restaurants are family kitchens, and the main event is a bicycle ride. If you get bored without a list of sights, you will be bored here by the second afternoon.
It is also not luxury, unless you book the ecolodge. Homestays are clean and friendly but basic, with shared bathrooms and thin walls. Knowing that before you arrive is the difference between loving it and counting the hours.
