Arriving in Vietnam at Night (2026): What Is Actually Open at SGN and HAN

Arriving in Vietnam at night is safe and completely workable: immigration processes passengers whenever flights land, ride apps run around the clock, and hotels are used to 3 AM check-ins. What changes after dark is what is open, how long queues get when several red-eyes land together, and how much patience you have left. Here is what our night-shift greeters at SGN and HAN actually see.

Short answer: arriving in Vietnam at night works fine if you prepare three things before boarding — visa approved, eSIM installed, hotel warned about late check-in. Immigration is staffed all night; some airport services are not. Our airport hosts work at night too (+$8 USD per person). Updated: July 15, 2026.

Is Arriving in Vietnam at Night a Problem?

No — arriving in Vietnam at night is routine at the two big gateways. Tan Son Nhat (SGN) and Noi Bai (HAN) receive international flights through the night, and immigration counters are staffed for every arrival. The catch is bunching: long-haul flights from Europe, Australia and the Gulf tend to land in waves late at night, and a terminal that was empty at 12:30 AM can grow a 40-minute queue by 1:15 AM when two wide-bodies unload at once. Realistic wait bands by airport and hour are in our immigration wait-times guide.

What Is Open at the Airport After Midnight?

Lit arrivals kerbside with waiting cars after dark, where pickups happen when arriving in Vietnam at night

After midnight, count on immigration, baggage claim, ATMs and taxi/ride pick-up zones — and not much else. Based on what our greeters see on night shifts:

Service Late at night Our advice
Immigration & visa-on-arrival counter Staffed for arriving flights Have e-visa printed; VOA can add its own wait
ATMs Usually available in arrivals Withdraw a small amount for the ride
SIM card kiosks Often closed or unstaffed Install an eSIM before you fly
Currency exchange Hit or miss Skip it; card + ATM covers night one
Food & coffee Mostly closed Eat on the plane; convenience stores in the city run 24/7

How Do You Get to Your Hotel at 2 AM?

Grab and airport taxis operate all night at both SGN and HAN — expect a slightly longer wait for a driver and modest night fares, not a stranded-at-the-airport situation. Use the official taxi ranks or the marked ride-app pick-up zones, agree to nothing offered by touts inside the hall, and message your hotel in advance so reception expects you. If you are landing in Ho Chi Minh City for the first time, our step-by-step Tan Son Nhat fast track guide covers where the pick-up zones are.

Do Airport Hosts Work When You Arrive in Vietnam at Night?

Yes — our hosts work night shifts, and night is when guests tell us it helps most. Between 20:00 and 6:00 a night surcharge of $8 USD per person per route applies on top of the normal price (Standard arrival from $30 USD), so a late-night arrival costs $38 USD per person. For that, a host waits in the arrival hall with your name on a board, walks you to the right counter and stays with you; on VIP and VVIP the host also takes the bags out to the car while you keep hold of the kids. Whether that trade is worth it at your arrival hour is exactly what we break down in our honest worth-it guide; the short version is that late-night landings and families are the two clearest yes-cases. KissTour is a private hospitality service: your flight and passenger details are registered with the airport in advance, so your host takes you through the fast-track line instead of the general queue. You can book airport assistance online and pay later, with free cancellation announced in advance.

“At 1 AM nobody knows which way to walk, and after a long flight that is the part that breaks people,” says Ngân, who coordinates our airport meet-and-greet teams. “We are standing there holding their name, and we carry the bags.”

Night Arrival Checklist

Before boarding a flight that lands in Vietnam after 22:00: (1) e-visa approved and printed — if it is still processing, sort it on the official portal, evisa.gov.vn, before you fly; (2) eSIM installed and tested; (3) hotel notified of your arrival time, booking confirmation offline; (4) $20–30 USD equivalent in accessible cash plan for the ride; (5) screenshot of your hotel address in Vietnamese for the driver; (6) optional: airport assistance booked so someone is waiting for you by name. Entry paperwork rules are summarized in our Vietnam entry requirements guide.

Arriving in Vietnam at Night: FAQ

Is immigration open 24/7 at Vietnamese airports?

Counters are staffed for every arriving international flight, whatever the hour. Fewer desks may be open than at daytime peaks, which is why late arrival waves queue up.

Is it safe to take a taxi from the airport at night?

Yes, from the official ranks or ride-app zones. Ignore unsolicited offers inside the terminal — that rule matters more at 2 AM than at 2 PM.

Can I get my visa on arrival at night?

The VOA counter serves arriving flights, but it adds its own processing wait on top of immigration. With a night landing, an approved e-visa in hand is the calmer play.

How much is airport assistance for a late-night arrival?

Standard arrival is $30 USD plus the $8 USD night surcharge (20:00–6:00) — $38 USD per person. Children under 11 pay 75% of the adult price.

Should I just book a daytime flight instead?

If prices are equal, a daytime landing is gentler. But night flights are often significantly less expensive, and with the checklist above the difference on the ground is small.
