Short answer: The Hanoi Old Quarter is the dense grid of shophouse streets just north of Hoan Kiem Lake, and it is where most first-time visitors should stay. Rooms run roughly $28–60 USD a night, almost everything is walkable, and the streets are loud until midnight.
What Is the Hanoi Old Quarter?
The Hanoi Old Quarter is a thousand-year-old trading district of narrow streets in Hoan Kiem, packed into roughly one square kilometre north of the lake. It is known as the 36 streets, after the craft guilds that once occupied them. The names still say what each street sold: Hang Bac for silver, Hang Gai for silk, Hang Duong for sugar and dried fruit, Cha Ca for grilled fish.
Some of that is still literally true. Walk Hang Thiec and you hear tin being beaten; walk Lan Ong and the air smells of dried herbs. The shophouses are famously thin — a few metres wide, many metres deep — because old taxes were levied on street frontage. The history of the quarter runs back to the 11th century, and the street plan has barely moved since.
For a visitor, the practical meaning is simple: the Hanoi Old Quarter is the part of the city where you do not need transport. Everything is a ten-minute walk, including breakfast.

Should You Stay in the Hanoi Old Quarter?
For a first trip of two to four nights, yes. You wake up inside the thing you came to see, you can eat six meals without repeating a street, and you can walk home at midnight instead of negotiating a ride. The density is the point.
Stay elsewhere if you are here for a week or more, travelling with small children who nap, or a light sleeper who needs quiet. Those are real reasons, not fussiness — the Old Quarter is genuinely noisy, and construction, karaoke and delivery motorbikes do not observe a curfew.

Which Streets in the Hanoi Old Quarter Are Quiet?
This is the question that decides whether you like your hotel. The Hanoi Old Quarter is not uniformly loud — it has a noisy core and a calm rim, and they are only a few hundred metres apart.
| Area | Character | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Ta Hien and around | Beer street; bia hoi from late afternoon, busy to midnight | Under-30s, short stays, heavy sleepers |
| Hang Bac / Hang Be | Central, busy by day, calmer by 23:00 | First-timers who want to be in the middle |
| Hang Gai / Hang Trong (lake edge) | Silk shops, cafes, 3 minutes to Hoan Kiem Lake | Couples, anyone walking the lake at dawn |
| Hang Bong / Hang Da (west side) | More residential, fewer bars, good value | Longer stays, light sleepers |
| Near Dong Xuan Market (north) | Wholesale trade, loud at 05:00, dead at 21:00 | Early risers, market photographers |
Whatever street you pick, ask for a room at the back and above the second floor. Hanoi shophouses are deep, so a rear room on a loud street is often quieter than a front room on a calm one.
What Does a Hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter Cost?
Listed rates on the major booking sites in September 2026 put hostel dorm beds at roughly $8–12 USD a night, solid three-star doubles at about $28–60 USD, and small boutique hotels at $50–80 USD. Those are agency-listed ranges rather than an official survey, and they move sharply with season. Expect the top of each band from October through Tet, and the bottom in the wet months of June to August.
Two costs people forget. Breakfast is usually included and usually worth skipping in favour of a 40,000 VND bowl of pho on the street (~$1.50 USD at about 26,000 VND to $1 USD, checked 24 September 2026). And rooms inside the Hanoi Old Quarter are often small — 18 to 22 m² is normal, because the buildings themselves are narrow.
Food prices are the same across the quarter with one caveat: the most touristed streets run 20–30% above neighbourhood prices. Pho is 40,000–50,000 VND, bun cha 40,000–70,000 VND, banh mi 20,000–40,000 VND, and egg coffee 30,000–45,000 VND at the old family cafes. Our north-to-south pho guide explains why the northern bowl tastes so different from the Saigon version.
What Is Within Walking Distance?
Almost everything a short trip needs. From the middle of the Hanoi Old Quarter:
- Hoan Kiem Lake — 5 minutes. Roads around it close to traffic from 19:00 Friday until midnight Sunday, turning the whole area into a weekend street party.
- Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre, 57B Dinh Tien Hoang — 6 minutes. Tickets 100,000–200,000 VND, shows about 50 minutes, evening slots sell out first.
- Dong Xuan Market — 8 minutes north. The oldest covered market in the city, open roughly 06:00–18:00.
- Train Street — 10 minutes west. Access only as a customer of a permitted cafe; barriers are staffed and walking the tracks is not allowed.
- Hanoi Railway Station — about 10 minutes by taxi, useful for the night train north or south.
- Temple of Literature — 25 minutes on foot or a short Grab. Entry 70,000 VND, open 08:00–17:00, with earlier summer opening from 15 April to 15 October.
A little further out, the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex in Ba Dinh is a 15-minute ride. Note that the mausoleum itself was scheduled to close for maintenance from 4 September to 2 November 2026, reopening 3 November — worth confirming before you build a morning around it.

What Are the Downsides of the Hanoi Old Quarter?
Three, and they are worth knowing before you book rather than after.
Noise. Bars near Ta Hien run to midnight and to roughly 01:00 at weekends; wholesale deliveries start before dawn near Dong Xuan. Earplugs are not a joke here.
Pavements. They are parking, kitchen and workshop, so you walk in the road. It works, but it takes half a day to relax about. Cross at a steady pace without stopping and traffic flows around you — hesitating is what causes problems.
Tourist pricing. Not dangerous, just persistent: snacks you did not order appearing on the table, unmetered taxis, cyclo rides quoted per person after the fact. Agree every price before you accept anything, and use Grab rather than flagging a car.
None of this is a reason to avoid the Hanoi Old Quarter. It is a reason to book a rear room and confirm prices out loud.
Where Else Could You Stay in Hanoi?
Three alternatives cover most needs, all within about six kilometres.
| District | What it is like | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| French Quarter (south of the lake) | Wide boulevards, colonial buildings, the opera house, bigger hotel rooms | Quieter and smarter; less street food at your door |
| Ba Dinh | Government quarter, mausoleum complex, embassies, leafy and calm | 10–15 minutes from the Old Quarter by car; thin at night |
| Tay Ho (West Lake) | Expat neighbourhood, lakeside cafes, international food, long-stay apartments | Genuinely quiet, but a ride away from everything historic |
A useful rule: two or three nights, stay in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Five nights or more, split — two in the Old Quarter for the noise and the food, the rest in the French Quarter or Tay Ho for sleep. If Hanoi is part of a longer route, our 10-day Vietnam itinerary shows how the nights usually fall.
How Do You Get From Noi Bai to the Hanoi Old Quarter?
Noi Bai Airport is 27–32 km out, a 35–60 minute drive depending on traffic. Grab runs about 200,000–300,000 VND (~$7.70–11.50 USD), and airport bus 86 costs 45,000 VND and stops near the Old Quarter and the railway station. Our Noi Bai arrival guide covers the SIM, cash and taxi-rank details.
Landing in the busy October-to-Tet window, or on a late flight? Fast track at Noi Bai starts at $30 USD per passenger for arrival: a greeter meets you at the aircraft exit before immigration, walks you through a priority counter and out to the pick-up area. On a night when four widebodies land together it is the difference between dinner in the Old Quarter and a closed kitchen.
Getting around once you are in town is simple: walk inside the quarter, Grab for anything beyond it, metro for longer hops. Lines 2A and 3 charge 8,000–15,000 VND a ride, or 30,000 VND for a day pass, running 05:30 to 22:00.

FAQ: Staying in the Hanoi Old Quarter
Is the Hanoi Old Quarter a good area to stay in?
Yes, for most first-time visitors. It is central, walkable and full of food, with rooms from roughly $28–60 USD a night. Its weakness is noise, so ask for a rear room on an upper floor.
How many nights do you need in the Hanoi Old Quarter?
Two to three covers the quarter itself and Hoan Kiem Lake comfortably. Add nights if you are using Hanoi as a base for Ninh Binh, Ha Long Bay or Sapa.
Is the Hanoi Old Quarter safe at night?
Generally yes — violent crime against visitors is rare and walking home at midnight is normal. The real risks are bill padding, unmetered taxis and pickpocketing in crowds.
Why is it called the 36 streets?
After the craft guilds that occupied them. Street names still carry the trade: Hang Bac was silver, Hang Gai silk, Hang Duong sugar. Several streets still sell roughly what their names say.
How far is the Hanoi Old Quarter from Noi Bai Airport?
About 27–32 km, or 35–60 minutes by road. Grab typically costs 200,000–300,000 VND; airport bus 86 is 45,000 VND and stops near the quarter.
Is the Old Quarter better than the French Quarter for a first trip?
For food and atmosphere, yes. The French Quarter has bigger rooms, wider streets and quieter nights, which makes it the better choice for longer stays or light sleepers.
