Overnight cruise boat sailing through Ha Long Bay on a 5-day Northern Vietnam itinerary

Northern Vietnam Itinerary 2026: 5 Days From Hanoi

The best five-day northern Vietnam itinerary is two nights in Hanoi, a full day in…

Short answer: The best five-day northern Vietnam itinerary is two nights in Hanoi, a full day in Ninh Binh, one night on a bay cruise and a final Hanoi morning. That is three destinations, not four. Adding Sapa costs you two nights of travel you do not have.

What Does a Realistic 5-Day Northern Vietnam Itinerary Look Like?

A five-day northern Vietnam itinerary works when it accepts one thing: everything in the north radiates out from Hanoi, and every side trip costs you the drive back. Five days holds three places comfortably. Four is possible on paper and miserable in practice.

Here is the shape that works, assuming you land in Hanoi on the evening before Day 1 or early on Day 1 itself.

Day Where Night
1 Hanoi — Old Quarter, Temple of Literature, street food Hanoi
2 Ninh Binh day trip — Trang An, Hang Mua Hanoi
3 Transfer to the bay, board the cruise, kayak, sunset On the boat
4 Sunrise, morning cave, return to Hanoi, water puppets Hanoi
5 Coffee, one museum or market, fly out —

Total road time across the whole week: about ten hours, all of it in daylight, none of it overnight. That is the number to optimise, and it is why this version beats the four-destination ones you will see advertised.

Day 1 — How Should You Spend Your First Day in Hanoi?

Slowly, and mostly on foot. The Old Quarter is 36 streets across roughly one square kilometre, each historically named for the trade that worked it, and walking it beats any itinerary you could write for it.

Start at the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, founded in 1070. Entry is 70,000 VND (~$2.70 USD), open 08:00–17:00, and 07:30–17:30 in summer from 15 April to 15 October. Go early: it is the one major sight that genuinely empties before 09:00.

Then eat. Pho runs 40,000–50,000 VND (~$1.50–1.90 USD) in the Old Quarter, bun cha 40,000–70,000 VND, banh mi 20,000–40,000 VND, and egg coffee 30,000–45,000 VND at the original cafés — about 50,000–70,000 VND at the newer ones with a view. The 2026 Michelin Guide to Vietnam lists 72 Bib Gourmand addresses nationally, 23 of them in Hanoi, which is a useful shortlist when you are tired of choosing.

One thing to check before you plan: Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum is closed for maintenance until 2 November 2026 and reopens on 3 November. The surrounding complex stays walkable, but the mausoleum itself is off the list if you are travelling this autumn.

If it is a Friday, Saturday or Sunday evening, the streets around Hoan Kiem Lake close to traffic from 19:00 on Friday until midnight on Sunday. Walk them.

Day 2 — Is Ninh Binh Worth a Full Day?

Ninh Binh is worth a full day and is the single best day trip in northern Vietnam. Limestone karst identical to the bays, except you float through it on a rowed sampan with rice fields on either side — and the boats are rowed by women, often with their feet, on a two to three hour circuit.

Getting there is easy. Trains run six times a day from Hanoi and take two hours nine minutes, from 93,000 VND (~$3.60 USD). Shared limousine vans cost around 200,000 VND (~$7.70 USD) door to door and take a similar time.

Pick one boat route, not two. Trang An, a UNESCO mixed World Heritage site, costs 250,000 VND (~$9.60 USD) and runs 07:00–17:00; some gates quote 300,000 VND including the entry ticket. Tam Coc costs the same and is prettier when the rice turns gold between mid-May and mid-June. Then climb Hang Mua, around 100,000–150,000 VND, roughly 500 steps, open 06:00–19:00 — the view from the top is the photograph everyone comes north for.

Be back on the 17:00 train or van. You need a proper night’s sleep before the bay.

Day 3 and 4 — Ha Long Bay or Lan Ha Bay?

Either, and the overnight is the point. Both bays sit inside one UNESCO property, Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago, 65,650 hectares and 1,133 islands. The difference is traffic: Ha Long has the famous caves and the crowds, Lan Ha Bay off Cat Ba Island has quieter water and beaches you can swim off.

Ha Long City is two and a half to three hours from Hanoi by expressway, with shared limousines at roughly 260,000–330,000 VND (~$10–13 USD) one way. Cat Ba is about 150 km and two and a half to three and a half hours, usually on a through-ticket bus around $15 USD that includes the sea crossing. The seaplane transfer people still read about online stopped operating on 1 April 2026.

Budget roughly $145–200 USD per person for a mid-range two-day, one-night cruise including meals and the official sightseeing fee. Budget boats start near $90 USD and luxury climbs past $250 USD. The official bay fee alone is 550,000 VND (~$21 USD) for a route 2 overnight, and it is normally baked into the price — confirm, because a few budget operators collect it at the pier.

Skip the day-trip version unless your dates force it. A day trip is five to six hours of road for four hours afloat, arriving exactly when every other day boat does — about twelve hours away from Hanoi to buy four on the water.

Day 4 you are back in Hanoi by late afternoon. Book the 18:30 or 20:00 water puppet show at Thang Long — 100,000–200,000 VND, about 50 minutes, and the live orchestra is the actual draw.

Day 5 — What Should You Do on the Last Morning?

Nothing that needs a taxi. Egg coffee somewhere with a balcony, then one of: the Vietnamese Women’s Museum, Dong Xuan market before 10:00, or simply the lake circuit again at the hour when the city exercises in it.

Leave two hours for the airport run: Noi Bai is 27 to 32 km from the Old Quarter, 35 to 60 minutes depending on traffic, Grab around 200,000–300,000 VND (~$8–12 USD), or the 86 bus at 45,000 VND (~$1.70 USD). Our Noi Bai guide covers both directions, and fast track at Noi Bai from $30 USD per person is worth it on departure if you are flying at a peak hour with checked bags.

Should You Add Sapa to a 5-Day Northern Vietnam Itinerary?

No — not without dropping something. Sapa is 296 km from Hanoi. The night train to Lao Cai leaves around 22:00 and arrives 05:55 to 06:25, seven and a half to eight and a half hours, from 476,000 VND (~$18 USD) on the standard sleepers and more on the tourist carriages. Lao Cai is still about 30 km from Sapa town, another 45 minutes by local bus at roughly 30,000 VND. Sleeper buses do it for $10–15 USD.

Two nights of that, plus one day of trekking, eats three of your five days. If Sapa is the reason you are coming north, swap it in and cut the bay entirely: Hanoi, Sapa, Hanoi. Do not try to hold both. The travellers who regret their northern week are almost always the ones who tried to hold both.

Same answer for the Ha Giang loop, which needs four days on its own. Save it for a longer trip — our 10-day Vietnam itinerary shows where it fits, and how many days you need in Vietnam is the honest maths on the whole country.

When Is the Best Time to Travel This Route?

Late October through November, comfortably. Hanoi averages 18.8–26.4 °C in November with about 60 mm of rain across 8 days — the driest, clearest month of the year, and the bays are calm. Mid-March to mid-April is the second window, before the summer heat lands.

December to February is dry but grey and cool at 15–22 °C. January gets only one and a half to two and a half hours of sun a day — fine for Hanoi and Ninh Binh, poor for a bay night. July and August are the wettest months, 255–275 mm across 16 to 17 days, and sit inside the typhoon season that runs late May to early November. If you travel then, leave a spare day: when the port authority closes the bay, boats do not sail, and that is a safety call rather than an operator excuse.

Our Vietnam weather guide has the month-by-month view, and our packing list covers the layer nobody brings for the bay at sunrise.

Can KissTour Run This Northern Vietnam Itinerary?

We are opening in northern Vietnam now. KissTour has spent years running tours in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang with an all-women team of riders, more than 5,000 five-star reviews, and a book-now-pay-later policy — you pay cash after the tour, not before. The northern routes are being built the same way: small groups, real food, no coach buses. Prices for the north are not published yet.

Message us on WhatsApp with your dates and we will tell you what is running and, just as usefully, what we would cut from your plan. If you are deciding between the north and the south first, our Hanoi versus Ho Chi Minh City comparison is the place to start, and the Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City transport guide covers the long hop south afterwards.

FAQ: 5-Day Northern Vietnam Itinerary

Is 5 days enough for northern Vietnam?

Yes, for three destinations: Hanoi, Ninh Binh and one bay night. It is not enough for Sapa or the Ha Giang loop as well, both of which need two to four extra days once travel time is counted.

What is the best order for a 5-day northern Vietnam itinerary?

Hanoi first, Ninh Binh as a day trip on day two, the bay overnight on days three and four, and a slow final morning in Hanoi. This keeps every transfer in daylight and puts your loosest day next to your flight.

Can you do Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay in the same trip?

Easily. They sit in opposite directions from Hanoi, so you return to the city between them rather than connecting them directly. Both are comfortable half-day drives.

How much does 5 days in northern Vietnam cost?

Roughly $180–275 USD per person on a budget and $355–590 USD mid-range, excluding flights. The bay cruise is the single largest line in both.

Is the night train to Sapa worth it on a short trip?

Only if Sapa replaces the bay. The train takes seven and a half to eight and a half hours each way and Lao Cai station is still 30 km from Sapa town, so the round trip costs you two nights.

What is the best month for this itinerary?

November. Hanoi averages 18.8–26.4 °C with about 60 mm of rain across 8 days, the bays are calm, and the haze that flattens karst photographs has cleared.
