Hoi An Day Trip From Da Nang (2026): Timing, Tickets and What to Skip

Nearly everyone based in Da Nang gives Hoi An one day, and most of them hand it the wrong hours – they arrive at 9:00 am, melt in the midday heat, and leave before the town does the one thing it is famous for. Our riders drive this 30 km road several times a week. This guide fixes the timing, tells you what the 2026 ticket actually costs (there is real confusion this year), and marks what you can skip without regret. Morning or afternoon? The honest answer

Go in the afternoon and stay for the evening. Almost every guide on the internet tells you to arrive early – “the first two hours before 11 am are the most valuable.” That advice is written for tour-bus operators, not for you. Buses start early because their day has to end early; it has nothing to do with when Hoi An is at its best.

Here is what the morning camp leaves out. Between 11:00 am and 3:00 pm in the dry season, the Ancient Town is hot and the low yellow walls throw no shade. The lanterns and river boats – the entire reason the town is on your list – only work at dusk. And the central lanes close to traffic in the evening, so the crowds thin into something walkable. A morning visit gives you a pretty but ordinary old street; an evening visit gives you Hoi An.

The one real exception runs the other way in intensity, not direction: on a full-moon lantern night, leave even earlier – around 4:00-4:30 pm – so you are settled riverside before the town cuts its electric lights around 8:00 pm (dates and detail below). If a genuine morning suits your flights better, go before 9:00 am and treat it as a coffee-and-walking trip, not the lantern experience people picture.

What we tell guests about timing: take the boat out on the river around 6:00 pm – if you are lucky the sun drops low and turns the water red, which is a beautiful moment to be out on the water. After dark the town looks its best, with the lanterns glowing against the black river; the trade-off is that the river gets busier at night, so the earlier boat is the calmer ride.

Your afternoon in Hoi An, hour by hour

A well-built afternoon needs roughly six to seven hours door to door and follows the light. Here is the plan our riders use.

1. 1:30 pm – leave Da Nang. Take the coastal road past My Khe beach; it is prettier than the inland highway and about the same time.
2. 2:15 pm – Bay Mau coconut forest (Cam Thanh), on the way in. A basket-boat ride through the palm waterways, a completely different landscape 15 minutes short of the Old Town. Independently this runs about 200,000-250,000 VND per person (about $7.70-9.60 USD) for roughly an hour.
3. 3:45 pm – reach the Ancient Town edge. Vehicles cannot enter the heritage core, so every drop-off is a 3-5 minute walk from the first lanes. Buy your ticket at a yellow booth here.
4. 4:00-6:00 pm – one or two heritage houses, then wander. See the Japanese Covered Bridge and one merchant house or assembly hall while it is light. Cover shoulders and knees – the old houses enforce it.
5. 6:00 pm – the streets go car-free and the lanterns light. This is the switch you came for. Take the Thu Bon river boat now, at dusk, for the lanterns from the water.
6. 7:00 pm – dinner in town. Cao lau and white rose dumplings are Hoi An dishes you cannot get properly on the coast.
7. 8:30 pm – walk out to a main road for your ride back. Do not expect a car to reach you inside the pedestrian zone.

How to get from Da Nang to Hoi An

The fastest, simplest option is a private car or Grab: about 30 km, 40-55 minutes, and 250,000-350,000 VND (about $10-13.50 USD) each way. Every option, with the trade-off nobody tells you:

The return leg is what people underestimate. After about 9:00 pm cars thin out around the Ancient Town, and the pedestrianised core means your driver cannot reach where you are standing. Either walk out to a main road to meet a Grab, or arrange the ride back before you go in.

The 2026 Ancient Town ticket, honestly

You only need a ticket to enter the heritage buildings – not to walk the streets, cross most bridges, eat, or shop. The settled price for a foreign adult is 120,000 VND (about $4.60 USD): a booklet of five tear-off coupons covering five of the roughly 22 protected sites – merchant houses, assembly halls, small museums and the Japanese Covered Bridge – printed valid for 24 hours.

What is genuinely uncertain in 2026: following the 2025 Da Nang-Quang Nam administrative merger, an 80,000 VND (about $3.10 USD) figure and a validity of up to three days now appear on Da Nang’s official tourism portal and in local reporting, alongside the traditional 120,000 VND / 24-hour ticket that most booths still issue on the ground. Treat the lower-cost, longer-validity ticket as possible but not guaranteed: confirm the exact price and validity at the booth on the day, and do not be surprised if you are simply sold the classic 120,000 VND booklet.

A few practical facts that hold either way:

• Children are priced by height: under 1 m free, 1-1.4 m pays 50,000 VND (about $1.90 USD), over 1.4 m pays full price.
• Bring cash. Booths are cash-preferred and the nearest ATMs are slow at peak times.
• Booths run roughly 07:00-21:30 in summer across about 11 locations at the main entrances to the Old Town.

Our honest read: buy it. You will likely use only two or three of the five coupons in one evening, but a single 200-year-old trading house is what separates Hoi An from a pretty shopping street – and the fee funds the town’s upkeep.

Full-moon lantern nights: 2026 dates and timing

Lanterns glow on the river every single evening – you do not have to plan around the festival. But once a lunar month, on the 14th day, the town switches off its electric street lighting around 8:00 pm and is lit only by lantern and candle. It is beautiful and busy in equal measure. Note the earlier pickup: on these nights you want to be seated riverside before the lights go off, not fighting the crowd through dark lanes at 8:15 pm. If you dislike crowds, a normal (non-festival) evening gives you 90 percent of the lantern magic with half the people.

When a Hoi An day trip is NOT worth it

Skip the day trip and sleep in Hoi An instead if the town is the actual reason you came to central Vietnam. The Ancient Town belongs to residents and overnight guests between about 9:00 pm and 9:00 am – the quietest, best hours – and a day-tripper never sees them. Choose your base honestly:

• Stay overnight in Hoi An if: you are having clothes tailored (fittings need a full day-plus), you want the empty early-morning streets, or you plan to ride out to the beaches and rice paddies.
• Day-trip from Da Nang if: your base is the coast for beach mornings, city food and easy flights, and you want Hoi An done well in one well-timed afternoon.

Also reconsider a day trip in heavy rain (Hoi An floods in October-November and low streets can close), or if your whole party wilts in humidity – the walking is unavoidable.
