How Many Days Do You Need in Da Nang? 3, 4 and 5-Day Plans (2026)

People miscount Da Nang because the beach, the mountains, an old French hill station and a UNESCO town all sit inside an hour’s drive of one hotel – so it feels like you can do everything in two days, and then you spend both of them in a van. This guide gives you the decision in one number, then the hour-by-hour plans our riders actually run, costed per person, plus the one scheduling mistake that quietly eats a day. How many days do you actually need?

Four. That is the shortest stay that fits both big day trips and keeps a beach morning, which is usually the reason people chose Da Nang in the first place. Everything shorter forces a trade; everything longer just adds comfort. Here is the honest breakdown, including who each length is wrong for.

The exact 4-day plan, hour by hour and costed

This is the plan we recommend most often, and its shape matters as much as its contents: one big mountain day, one evening-town day, and two half-days that keep you near the beach. It alternates a long day with a short one so you are never wrung out two days running.

What we see with our own guests: most people give Da Nang three days and quietly wish they had given it more – it is that kind of place. Because Hoi An sits right next door, the easy fix is to treat this as a central Vietnam trip rather than just Da Nang: add a night or two and you can slow down instead of racing the clock.

The 3-day plan (when four is not possible)

Three days is enough if you pick one day trip and let the other go. Choose Hoi An: it is closer, lower-cost, and it is genuinely better in the evening, so it earns the afternoon slot that Ba Na Hills cannot.

1. Day 1 – City. Morning at My Khe and the Marble Mountains before the midday heat; dinner by the river and the Dragon Bridge after dark.
2. Day 2 – Hoi An. Beach or pool morning, then the coconut forest and Hoi An trip from 1:30pm so you catch the Old Town at its best hour.
3. Day 3 – Choose one. Either Ba Na Hills (a full day – see below) if you would rather have the mountain than the beach, or a Son Tra sunrise and a food tour to close out. You cannot have both and the beach.

Is 3 days enough for Da Nang and Hoi An? Yes – as long as Hoi An is a long afternoon and evening rather than an overnight stay. If you want to sleep in Hoi An and shop for tailoring properly, that is its own two nights and a different itinerary.

The 5-day plan: the same trip, with insurance

Five days is the four-day plan with margin built in, and the margin is worth real money in the wet season. Add one of these on day four or five, and keep a genuinely open beach morning:

• My Son Sanctuary – the UNESCO Cham ruins about 40 km (~1 hour) from the city, best in the cooler early morning. Entry is 150,000 VND (about $6 USD). This is the standout add that most short itineraries miss, and it pairs naturally with Hoi An since both lie south-west of the city.
• Cham Islands – a boat day of snorkelling and seafood off Hoi An, weather-permitting and seasonal (roughly March to September).
• A second beach day – a Son Tra peninsula sunrise ride to the Lady Buddha, then nothing but sand.

The freshness fact nobody else is using: since 2026, a Ba Na Hills entry ticket is valid for up to three consecutive days rather than one. On a five-day trip that turns a cloudy Golden Bridge morning from a write-off into a free do-over – go back up on a clearer day at no extra ticket cost. That single change is the best argument for the fifth day in October and November.

Five days also suits families best. Children cope far better with a beach morning plus one activity a day than with two long van trips in a row.

Do it yourself, or take a tour?

You can absolutely do Da Nang independently – Grab (car and bike) is low-cost and everywhere, and the beach, Marble Mountains and Dragon Bridge need no guide at all. Where a guide earns its keep is the two out-of-town days. Here is the honest decision:

• Go DIY with Grab if your days are city-and-beach only, you like setting your own clock, and you are comfortable buying the Ba Na cable-car ticket yourself (from about 1,000,000 VND / ~$38 USD on the booking platforms).
• Take a group tour if you want Ba Na or Hoi An handled door to door and do not mind a fixed schedule – guided Ba Na day tours run roughly $75-125+ USD depending on inclusions.
• Take a private guide (our default) if you want the Golden Bridge before the crowds, the food stops a first-timer would never find, and the flexibility to reshuffle when the weather turns. Our private Ba Na Hills day is $105 USD for 2-4 guests – split three ways it lands close to the group price with none of the herding.

Who should skip the tours entirely? Repeat visitors who have already done Ba Na and Hoi An. On a return trip, spend the days on Son Tra, the quieter southern beaches and long lunches – the marquee sights do not reward a second full visit.

When in the year should those days fall?

Aim for the dry season: roughly February to August, with the best beach weather from about April to August. October and November are the wettest months and carry real typhoon risk, when flights and boat trips can be cancelled – exactly when the three-day Ba Na ticket and a five-day buffer pay for themselves. If you can only travel in the wet season, add a day and keep the outdoor plans flexible.

Da Nang and Hoi An together, or Da Nang versus Nha Trang?

Combined, Da Nang and Hoi An want four to five days total, not two separate trips. Base yourself in Da Nang, treat Hoi An as one evening (or one overnight if you want to shop), and you have covered both properly. There is no need to split your luggage across two hotels for a first visit.

Should you stay in Da Nang or Hoi An? Stay in Da Nang. It has the beach, the airport, the food and the day-trip launchpad; Hoi An is a compact, walkable town best savoured in an evening. Reverse it only if lantern-lit lanes and tailoring are the whole point of your trip.

Da Nang or Nha Trang? Nha Trang is the better pure beach-resort city; Da Nang wins on variety – mountains, a UNESCO town and a food scene within an hour.
