My Khe Beach in Da Nang, a long sandy coastline

Best Beaches in Da Nang (2026): My Khe, My An, Non Nuoc and Nam O

My Khe is Da Nang’s best all-round beach, but the coast has a beach for…

The short answer: My Khe is the best all-round beach in Da Nang – a 10 km stretch of fine sand right in the city, safest for swimming roughly March to September, with lifeguards, loungers and cafes. Go next door to My An (An Thuong) for the smoothie-bowl and craft-beer expat scene, Non Nuoc by the Marble Mountains for a gentle family slope, and Nam O out toward the Hai Van Pass for real seclusion. From October to March the sea is rough for swimming but that is exactly when the surf turns on.

Most guides to Da Nang’s coast quietly copy the same tourist-board blurb. This one is written the way we actually use these beaches between tours: which sand to pick for the day you want, what it costs, and – the part almost everyone skips – how to read the flags so you don’t get pulled off your feet. Da Nang’s “beach” is really one long coastline with very different characters strung along it, from the buzzy city sand to a working fish-sauce village. Conditions change daily; always check the flag and lifeguards on the day.

Which Da Nang beach for which traveller?

Pick by what you want from the day, not by fame – the “best” beach for a surfer is the worst for a toddler. Here is the honest match-up we give riders.

You are a… Best beach Why
Family with small kids Non Nuoc Gentle slope, calmer water, resort facilities, shade
First-timer wanting everything My Khe Lifeguards, loungers, seafood and cafes in one place
Couple / cafe-and-smoothie crowd My An (An Thuong) Free public access beside the expat food-and-bar zone
Surfer My Khe or Non Nuoc breaks Winter swell roughly 3-6 ft, offshore mornings
Photographer / sunrise chaser My Khe north end Son Tra backdrop, empty sand at first light
Seclusion seeker Nam O or Son Tra coves Few facilities, few people, local life

My Khe: the city beach and the gold standard

My Khe is the beach to pick first: about 10 km of fine white sand running from the foot of Son Tra Peninsula south toward Non Nuoc, calm and swimmable roughly March to September, and backed by an unbroken line of cafes, seafood joints and lounger vendors. It sits only about 3 km – a 10-minute Grab – from the Han River bridges, which is why locals pack it at dawn and again after 4pm.

It earns the hype: My Khe was named by Forbes among the world’s most attractive beaches and ranked 6th-best in Asia by Tripadvisor travellers in 2024. Water sits at a warm 25-30C most of the year, so no wetsuit for swimming. Lifeguards patrol roughly every 200 m and there is real infrastructure – showers, board rental, parking – which is exactly why it is the safe default for families and first-timers. Our full My Khe Beach guide goes deeper on where to sit along the strip.

My Khe vs My An: what’s the difference?

They are the same beach – My An (Bac My An) is simply the southern section of the long My Khe stretch, not a separate coastline. What makes it feel different is what sits behind the sand: My An backs onto An Thuong, Da Nang’s expat quarter of smoothie bowls, craft-beer bars, coworking cafes and low-cost massage. Beach access here is free and public.

Choose My Khe proper if you want the widest sand and the most lifeguards and loungers. Choose My An/An Thuong if you want to roll off the sand straight into a flat white or a sunset beer. Both are swimmable year-round when flags allow, with the same water and the same season.

Non Nuoc: the family beach by the Marble Mountains

Non Nuoc is the calm, family-friendly end – a gently shelving beach at the foot of the Marble Mountains, about 8 km south of the centre and lined with luxury resorts. The shallow, slow slope makes it the safest paddle for young children, and it is noticeably quieter than My Khe.

It is best in the calm season (roughly February to August), when the waves are gentlest. The obvious play is to climb the Marble Mountains’ caves and viewpoints in the cooler morning, then drop down to Non Nuoc to cool off – the two are essentially co-located, so you barely move. A Grab from My Khe to Non Nuoc runs about 50,000-70,000 VND (about USD 2-2.70).

Nam O and the quiet coves

For seclusion, head north to Nam O, an untouched beach about 17 km (roughly 30 minutes) from the centre out toward the Hai Van Pass. This is a working fish-sauce village, not a resort strip: its dawn fish market gets going around 5am, the fish sauce (nuoc mam Nam O) is a genuine local heritage product, and facilities are almost nil – bring your own water and shade. Come for the atmosphere and the raw coastline, not for loungers.

The other quiet option is the Son Tra Peninsula, where small coves like Bai But, Bai Rang and Tien Sa hide below the jungle road. Some sit inside resort or military land with a small entry fee – Tien Sa via the Navy Hotel is around 10,000 VND (about USD 0.40) – so check access before you commit the ride up.

Swim season vs surf season: the honest calendar

Here is the reframing most guides get wrong: October to March is not a “dead” season, it is surf season. Swimmers want the calm months; surfers want the rough ones. Plan around whichever you are.

Months Sea state Best for
Feb-May Calm, clear, best weather; water 25-30C Swimming, families, photography
Jun-Sep Warm and generally swimmable; hot midday Swimming (go early/late), water sports
Oct-Nov Rainy, typhoon risk; frequent red flags Surfers only; skip for swimming
Dec-Mar Bigger swell, offshore mornings, ~3-6 ft Surfing at My Khe and Non Nuoc breaks

My Khe and My An have lifeguards and are the most reliably swimmable when flags allow; Non Nuoc is at its friendliest in the calm season. If you are here in winter and want to surf, board rental is easy to find along My Khe, and October alone offers clean, surfable waves roughly half the time.

Read the beach like a local (the safety bit nobody prints):

  • Flags: green = safe, yellow = caution, red = no swimming. Swim only inside the flagged corridor – the poles mark where lifeguards can actually see you.
  • Lifeguard hours: roughly 5am to 8pm at My Khe and Non Nuoc. Outside those hours you are on your own.
  • Rip currents are real even on sunny days, especially outside the flags and in shoulder season. If caught, swim parallel to shore, not against the pull.
  • Jellyfish turn up occasionally, mostly after storms – ask a lifeguard if unsure.
  • Sun: the tropical UV is brutal by 10am. SPF 50+, and treat 11am-3pm as shade time, not sunbathing time.

Best time of day, and what it all costs

Go early or late – never midday. The two golden windows are early morning (about 5:30-8am) for glassy water and cool air, and late afternoon (about 3:30-6:30pm) once the heat drops. Dawn is also when you see the real Da Nang: locals swimming, jogging and doing beach aerobics before work.

Prices are refreshingly small. Everything below is per item unless noted.

Item VND USD (at 26,000/USD)
Sun lounger / beach chair (day) 20,000-50,000 ~$0.80-2
Beach parking (motorbike) 2,000-10,000 ~$0.08-0.40
Motorbike rental (per day) 100,000-150,000 ~$4-6
Grab, My Khe to Non Nuoc 50,000-70,000 ~$2-2.70
Tien Sa beach entry (via Navy Hotel) ~10,000 ~$0.40

Figures checked in August 2026 and may change. For the how-to on Grab, bikes and taxis, see getting around Da Nang.

Our own beach habit: My Khe at first light, before 6:30 – swim while it is cool, then get a coconut from the first cart setting up. Locals treat the beach as a morning ritual, not a midday sunbathe, and they have it right: by late morning the sun is hard and the sand is full.

When a Da Nang beach is NOT worth it

Skip the beach entirely on a red-flag day in October-November – the water is closed, the sky is grey, and you will have a better time in the Marble Mountains caves or on a food crawl. Skip it midday in June-August too, when the sand is scorching and the sun is unforgiving. And if you have come chasing a wild, empty, palm-fringed cove, My Khe will disappoint – it is a lively city beach; go to Nam O or a Son Tra cove instead. Da Nang’s coast is superb, but honestly it is a swim-and-cafe beach, not a snorkelling paradise – for clear reef water you would look to the Cham Islands off Hoi An.

Pair the sand with the rest of your trip

The best beach days are a beach morning plus one other thing, not a full day baking. Do My Khe at dawn, then let the heat pass indoors. When the sun drops, the coast becomes the launchpad for the evening: seafood, the night markets and the Dragon Bridge. See how many days you need in Da Nang to slot a beach morning into a bigger plan, then hand the evening to us on the Da Nang by Night tour (USD 35) – a local guide, the food streets and the bridge fire show – or dig into the seafood scene on the Da Nang Food Tour (USD 49).

FAQ: Da Nang beaches

What is the best beach in Da Nang?

My Khe is the best all-rounder – a 10 km stretch of clean white sand right in the city, calmest for swimming from March to September, with lifeguards, loungers, showers and cafes. For quiet, choose Non Nuoc or Nam O instead.

Which Da Nang beach is best for families?

Non Nuoc, at the foot of the Marble Mountains about 8 km south of the centre. Its gentle, shallow slope and calmer water make it the safest paddle for small children, and it is quieter than My Khe.

When can you swim at Da Nang beaches?

Roughly March to September, when the sea is calm and the water is a warm 25-30C. February to May has the best weather overall. From October to December the rainy and typhoon season brings rough water and red flags that close swimming.

Is My Khe Beach safe for swimming?

Yes, in season and inside the flagged zones, where lifeguards patrol from about 5am to 8pm. Rip currents are a genuine risk outside the flags even on calm days, so always swim in the marked corridor and obey the green, yellow and red flags.

What is the difference between My Khe and My An beach?

They are the same beach – My An (Bac My An) is the southern section of the longer My Khe stretch. My An backs onto An Thuong, the expat zone of smoothie bowls, craft beer and coworking cafes, with free public beach access.

How far is My Khe Beach from central Da Nang?

About 3 km, or a 10-minute Grab or taxi ride from the Han River and the bridges. Non Nuoc is about 8 km south, and Nam O about 17 km north toward the Hai Van Pass.

Can you surf in Da Nang, and when is surf season?

Yes. Surf season runs the winter monsoon, roughly September to March, with the most consistent swell from December to March at around 3-6 ft. The My Khe and Non Nuoc breaks work best on offshore mornings, and board rental is easy to find along My Khe.

How much does a sun lounger cost at a Da Nang beach?

About 20,000-50,000 VND per day (roughly USD 0.80-2). Beach parking for a motorbike is about 2,000-10,000 VND. Figures checked in August 2026 and may change.

Which is the quietest beach in Da Nang?

Nam O for true seclusion – an untouched fish-sauce village about 17 km north with a 5am fish market and almost no facilities. The hidden Son Tra Peninsula coves (Bai But, Bai Rang, Tien Sa) are the next quietest option.
