Short answer: Swim at My Khe from May to August (June-August is the sweet spot), between the flags, while lifeguards are on duty (roughly 5 am to 8 pm). The water sits at about 23°C in cool months and around 28°C at the peak of summer. Sit on the central promenade along Vo Nguyen Giap, where a sunbed-and-umbrella set runs about 50,000-100,000 VND (~$2-$4 USD) a day and is often free if you order at a beach bar. Skip the water in October and November (storm season, red flags) – and come anyway for the surf and seafood. Figures checked in August 2026 and may change.
We are a women-led motorbike and food tour company in Da Nang and Saigon, and our ao dai riders drop guests at My Khe most weeks of the year – at dawn for the sunrise swimmers, at dusk for the seafood crowd. So this is not a brochure. It is the same run-through we give a nervous first-timer before they walk down to the sand: when the sea actually behaves, how to read the water so a rip current does not catch you off guard, where the good chairs and the honest seafood tanks are, and the months when you should put your swimsuit away and rent a surfboard instead.
When can you swim at My Khe Beach?
The reliable swimming season is May to August, and June to August is the standout – lowest rainfall, calmest and clearest sea, and warm water from sunrise to sunset. The water warms from around 23°C in the cooler months to about 28°C at the height of summer, so it is comfortable without a wetsuit through the whole peak season. April and September are good shoulder months if you watch the flags. Whatever the month, swim early morning or late afternoon: this beach faces east, so midday sun is fierce and the sand gets genuinely too hot to cross barefoot.
| Months | Water temp | Sea & flags | Jellyfish | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apr-May | ~24-26°C | Calming down, mostly green flags | Low | Great – warm and quieter than peak |
| Jun-Aug | ~27-28°C | Calmest, clearest; busiest | Higher – stay alert | Best swimming of the year |
| Sep | ~27°C | Warm, first showers, watch for yellow flags | Tapering off | Usually good – obey the flags |
| Oct-Nov | ~25°C | Rough swell, storm/typhoon risk, red flags | Low | Skip the swim – surf or spectate |
| Dec-Mar | ~23°C | Cooler, bigger monsoon waves | Low | Calm days only, and stay shallow |

Is My Khe safe – and how do you spot a rip current before you get in?
My Khe is generally safe to swim between the flags in the May-August season, but it has genuine rip currents year-round, so the single most useful skill is reading the water before you wade in – not just fearing it. A rip is a narrow river of water flowing back out to sea, and it gives itself away if you stand still on the sand for one minute and look:
- A patch of water that looks darker than the water on either side of it – that is deeper, channelled water heading out.
- A gap in the breaking waves – a lane where the sea looks flatter and calmer while waves break normally to the left and right. That calm lane is the trap.
- Foam, sand or debris drifting steadily out to sea instead of washing back to shore.
If any of those are in front of you, walk 50 metres along the beach and enter somewhere the waves break in a clean, even line. If you ever do get pulled out, the rule is the same one the lifeguards here shout: do not fight it straight back in. Stay calm, keep your head up, swim parallel to the shore until the pull lets go, then angle back in – and raise one arm and shout for help. Lifeguards patrol the main stretch in daylight, roughly 5 am to 8 pm, and they move the flag markers as conditions change. Never swim past a red flag, alone, or after the guards go off duty.
What our riders do differently: we treat any red flag as a hard no, not a suggestion – locals stay out even when the sea looks tempting, because the dangerous days here look deceptively calm on the surface. In summer we also scan for jellyfish (peak season is roughly June-August): if you get stung, rinse the sting gently with seawater, never fresh water (fresh water makes it worse), pick off any tentacles with something other than bare fingers, and ask the beach staff for help. Most stings here are mild, but they sting more if you panic and splash.

Where exactly should you sit?
Base yourself on the central promenade along Vo Nguyen Giap, where the lifeguard towers, chair rentals, showers and beach bars all cluster – this is the safest and most convenient stretch, especially with children. On maps and local signs you will see the lifeguarded swim zones named by their access points: the section near Pham Van Dong (closest to the city and busiest), the quieter T20-T18 stretch, and the “1-2-3” beach further along Vo Nguyen Giap. All three are patrolled; walk a few hundred metres beyond them and the crowds thin out – but so do the lifeguards, so weigh quiet against safety.
Families gravitate here for a reason: My Khe has a gentle slope and a long shallow shelf, so small children can wade well off shore and still touch the bottom. Our Da Nang with kids notes cover the family logistics. Facilities on the promenade include public showers, changing rooms and toilets (usually a small fee, around 10,000-20,000 VND / under $1 USD for a freshwater rinse).
Getting there: My Khe is about 3 km east of the city centre (10-15 minutes from the Dragon Bridge), roughly a 15-minute drive from Da Nang International Airport, and about 25 km from Hoi An – close enough for a morning swim on a Hoi An day trip. For taxis, ride apps and bike hire, see getting around Da Nang.
What does a beach day actually cost?
Very little. A sunbed-and-umbrella set is the only unavoidable spend, and even that is often free if you buy food or drinks. Here is the honest breakdown; confirm the number with the vendor before you sit down, as rates shift by spot and season.
| Item | Typical price | USD (~26,000 VND) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunbed + shared umbrella, per day | 50,000-100,000 VND | ~$2-$4 | Often waived if you order at the bar |
| Two beds + umbrella set | ~80,000 VND | ~$3 | The common “couple” rate |
| Umbrella only | ~30,000-50,000 VND | ~$1-$2 | If you bring your own mat |
| Shower / freshwater rinse | ~10,000-20,000 VND | under $1 | Changing rooms & toilets on the promenade |
| Water sports (jet ski, parasail, banana boat) | Agree the price first | – | Negotiate and confirm before you start |
Money-saving tip from experience: bring your own water and reef-safe sunscreen from a convenience store a block back – buying either on the sand costs noticeably more.
When My Khe is NOT worth a swim – and what to do instead
Be honest with yourself in October and November: this is Da Nang’s wet and typhoon window, when swell can push waves to two or three metres and the city flies red flags up and down the sand. Swimming is frequently banned outright, and no chair rental is worth ignoring a red flag. But this is exactly where most guides give up and tell you to stay away – and they are wrong. The off-season is a reason to visit, not skip:
- Surf it. Roughly October to March, the same swell that closes the swim season feeds a growing surf scene at My Khe, with board rental and beginner lessons available along the beach. The dead months for swimmers are the best months for surfers.
- Eat it. Storm-season seafood is just as fresh and the restaurants are half empty. Trade the swim for a long lunch (see below).
- Swap it for the city. On genuinely wet days, weight your plans toward the riverfront, indoor and inland options in our things to do in Da Nang guide.
A quick decision guide: choose a morning swim if it is May-September and the flags are green or yellow. Choose surf or seafood if it is October-March or the red flag is up. Choose the gentle shallow end near Pham Van Dong if you have small kids. Choose a quieter stretch past the “1-2-3” beach if you want space and are a confident swimmer who reads the water.
Where to eat seafood right by the beach
The lanes behind Vo Nguyen Giap are wall-to-wall seafood, from pick-your-own tank shacks to sit-down restaurants a two-minute walk from the sand. Be Ni 2 on this strip has earned a Michelin Bib Gourmand mention (2024 and 2025) for central-Vietnamese seafood like tamarind crab and grilled oysters, and long-runners such as My Hanh have fed beachgoers here for decades. The one rule that saves you money and arguments: point at what is fresh in the tank and agree the price per kilo before it is weighed and cooked – that is how locals order, and how you avoid a surprise bill. Our Da Nang seafood guide breaks down the dishes and the ordering; the wider Da Nang food guide covers the rest of the city.
How we read the water, and where we eat after: Before you swim at My Khe, look at the flag and watch where the locals are – if they are only paddling at the edge, you should too, because the rip currents here are real. When you are done, the local seafood pick just behind the beach on Man Thai is Be Man – busy, unfussy, with a live tank; choose the place the families are sitting at, not the one with the loudest host.
Turn the beach day into a full day
A dawn swim pairs perfectly with an evening in the city – rinse off, nap out the midday heat, then head back for the lit-up bridges after dark. Our Da Nang by night tour ($35 USD per person) rides the Dragon Bridge fire show, street-food stops and river views on the back of an ao dai motorbike, so your beach morning rolls straight into a proper Da Nang night. For a scenic detour north of the beach, Son Tra Peninsula and Lady Buddha sit just up the coast.
FAQ: Swimming, sitting and eating at My Khe Beach
Is My Khe Beach safe to swim in?
Yes, My Khe is generally safe to swim between the flags from May to August while lifeguards are on duty, but it has real rip currents year-round. Stay where you can touch the bottom, obey the flags, and never swim past a red flag, alone, or after the guards go off duty around 8 pm.
What is the best time of year to swim at My Khe Beach?
The best swimming is May to August, with June to August the standout for calm, clear, warm water and low rainfall. April and September are decent shoulder months if you watch the flags. Swim early morning or late afternoon, as midday sun on this east-facing beach is intense.
What months should you avoid swimming in Da Nang?
Avoid swimming at My Khe in October and November, the wettest and stormiest months, when swell can reach two to three metres and red flags close the water. December to March also brings bigger monsoon waves, so swim only on visibly calm days and stay shallow.
What is the water temperature at My Khe Beach?
The sea at My Khe ranges from about 23°C in the cooler months to around 28°C at the peak of summer, with some summer days nudging 30°C. Through the May-August peak season it is warm enough to swim comfortably without a wetsuit.

A sunbed with a shared umbrella costs roughly 50,000-100,000 VND (~$2-$4 USD) per day, and a two-bed-plus-umbrella set is commonly around 80,000 VND (~$3 USD). Many beach bars waive the chair fee entirely if you order food or drinks, so confirm the price before you sit.
Are there jellyfish at My Khe Beach?
