Short answer: Hanoi at night runs from about 19:00 to midnight. The streets around Hoan Kiem Lake close to traffic from 19:00 Friday until midnight Sunday, bia hoi on Ta Hien costs around 5,000 VND a glass, and most kitchens and bars wind down by 12:00.
What Is Hanoi at Night Actually Like?
Hanoi at night is a street city, not a club city. The good hours happen outside: plastic stools on the pavement, charcoal grills going in doorways, tea sellers on the corner, families circling Hoan Kiem Lake. It is busy rather than loud, and it finishes earlier than most visitors expect — by half past midnight the Old Quarter is genuinely quiet.
That shape matters when you plan. Saigon after dark keeps going until 2 or 3 in the morning; Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City really are different animals, and the northern capital rewards an early start to the evening. Eat at 18:30, not 21:00, and you get the city at full volume instead of watching it pack up around you.
Where Should You Start? Hoan Kiem Lake and the Weekend Walking Street
The weekend walking street is the single best free thing to do in Hanoi at night. From 19:00 on Friday until midnight on Sunday, the roads around Hoan Kiem Lake and a web of Old Quarter streets close to all vehicles. What fills the space is not a tourist show: badminton without a net, line dancing by the bandstand, children on plastic cars, teenagers with guitars, old men playing Chinese chess under a streetlight.
Walk the lake loop first — it takes about 25 minutes at a slow pace — then cut north into the Old Quarter grid where the food is. Ngoc Son Temple sits on its island at the northern end and closes in the evening, so treat the lake as scenery after dark rather than sightseeing.
Midweek the traffic is back and the lake is calmer. Not worse, just different: it becomes a place to sit with an iced tea rather than a street party.
What Should You Eat in Hanoi at Night?
Dinner in Hanoi at night costs very little, arrives fast and changes with the season. Bun cha — grilled pork in a bowl of sweet-sour broth, with a plate of noodles and herbs alongside — is the local order. The famous places are lunch operations, so evening versions are smaller and simpler. Pho runs all evening, and the northern bowl is cleaner and less sweet than its southern cousin; our pho guide covers the north-south split if you want to know what you are tasting.
Expect to pay 40,000–50,000 VND (~$1.50–1.90 USD) for pho, 40,000–70,000 VND for bun cha, and 20,000–40,000 VND for banh mi. Inside the Old Quarter tourist streets, add 20–30%. Egg coffee, invented here, runs 30,000–45,000 VND at the original family cafés and 50,000–70,000 VND at newer places with a view.
Want a shortlist with some authority behind it? The 2026 MICHELIN Guide selection for Vietnam includes 72 Bib Gourmand addresses — good food at fair prices — and 23 of them are in Hanoi. Several are evening street kitchens with four tables and no sign.
Eating on the street at 22:00 is normal here and, done sensibly, safe. Our guide to whether street food is safe in Vietnam has the rules we give our own guests: busy stall, high turnover, food cooked in front of you.
Is Ta Hien Beer Street Worth It?
Once, for an hour, early. Ta Hien is the crossroads in the Old Quarter where bia hoi — fresh draught beer, brewed that day, no preservatives — is poured into small glasses for around 5,000 VND (~$0.20 USD). Stalls set up from about 16:00, the street fills after 20:00, and most venues close around midnight, stretching to roughly 01:00 at weekends.
Go at 19:00 if you want a seat and a conversation. Go at 22:00 if you want the crush, the music and the crowd photos. It is the most concentrated thing in Hanoi at night, which also makes it the most touristed. The quieter bia hoi corners two or three streets away serve the same beer to mostly local tables.
One practical note: check the price of anything you did not order before it is opened, especially snacks brought to the table unasked.
What Else Is Open After Dark?
Four things reliably fill an evening beyond eating and drinking.
| What | When | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre | Evening shows about 18:30 and 20:00, ~50 minutes | 100,000–200,000 VND (~$3.85–7.70 USD) |
| Dong Xuan / Hang Dao night market | Friday to Sunday, roughly 18:00–22:30 | Free to walk |
| Lotte Observation Deck, 65th floor | Until midnight, last entry around 23:00 | Around 230,000 VND (~$8.85 USD) adult |
| Train Street cafés | Permitted cafés only, barriers staffed to about 23:00 | Price of a drink |
The water puppet show at 57B Dinh Tien Hoang, beside the lake, is the one cultural booking worth making in advance. It runs up to seven performances a day and the evening slots sell out first. The show is 50 minutes, it is genuinely old, and the live musicians are the best part.
The night market runs from Hang Dao up to the Dong Xuan market gate on weekend evenings. Closing times vary by source and by weather, so treat 22:30 as the safe assumption rather than a guarantee; the day market itself keeps normal hours, roughly 06:00–18:00.
Train Street deserves a straight answer, because the internet is confused about it. It is not open the way it was in 2019. The famous section is barriered, with staff stopping people from walking the tracks, and the only lawful way in is as a customer of a café that holds a permit. When a train is due you sit inside the café. Do that and it is a fine 40 minutes; ignore it and you will be turned back, which is the correct outcome.
How Do You Get Around Hanoi at Night?
Walk inside the Old Quarter — it is small, and after 19:00 on a weekend you have no choice anyway. For anything further, Grab is the default, and having the app installed before you land saves a lot of arguing about fares; our Grab guide explains how it works here.
The metro is useful but early to bed. Line 2A and Line 3 charge 8,000–15,000 VND a ride, or 30,000 VND for a day pass, and both stop running at 22:00. Plan on a Grab home if your evening goes long.
Landing at night rather than starting the evening? Our Noi Bai arrival guide covers the transfer into the Old Quarter. Fast track at Noi Bai, from $30 USD per person, earns its keep on a late landing — it can be the difference between dinner in the Old Quarter and a hotel vending machine.
Is Hanoi Safe at Night?
Yes, and that is the honest answer rather than a marketing one — violent crime against visitors is rare, and walking the Old Quarter at midnight is normal for solo travellers, including women. The risks here are small and financial. Bill padding at tourist bars, snacks you did not order appearing on the tab, taxi meters that run fast, and phones lifted from a back pocket in a crowd.
Four habits cover almost all of it. Agree the price before you accept anything. Use Grab rather than flagging an unmarked taxi. Keep your phone in a front pocket in a crowd. And cross the road at a steady pace without stopping — traffic flows around you, and the hesitation is what causes accidents.
For the wider picture of solo evenings in Vietnam, our Saigon nightlife guide covers the same ground for the south, where the hours run later.
What Does a Night in Hanoi Cost?
Less than you think. A full evening — street dinner, a couple of bia hoi, an egg coffee and a water puppet ticket — lands around 250,000–350,000 VND (~$9.60–13.50 USD) per person. Converted at roughly 26,000 VND to $1 USD, checked 18 September 2026.
| Item | Typical price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Bia hoi, one glass | ~5,000 VND (~$0.20 USD) | Ta Hien and Old Quarter corners |
| Bowl of pho | 40,000–50,000 VND | Add 20–30% on tourist streets |
| Bun cha | 40,000–70,000 VND | Mostly a lunch dish, smaller at night |
| Egg coffee | 30,000–45,000 VND | 50,000–70,000 VND at view cafés |
| Water puppet ticket | 100,000–200,000 VND | By seat tier, book ahead |
| Metro ride | 8,000–15,000 VND | Stops at 22:00 |
When Is the Best Time of Year for Hanoi at Night?
October and November. Evenings sit at 18–28 °C with low humidity, which is exactly the weather the walking street was made for. December to February is dry but properly cold at 16–23 °C, with a damp grey drizzle locals call mua phun. Bring a jacket: most restaurants here are open to the street.
June to August is the sweaty end of the year, and it is also when an evening outdoors beats an afternoon one by a wide margin. Our Vietnam weather guide has the month-by-month view if you are still choosing dates.

FAQ: Hanoi at Night

From 19:00 on Friday until midnight on Sunday. The roads around Hoan Kiem Lake and much of the Old Quarter close to vehicles for the whole weekend.
