Short answer: a Ninh Binh day trip from Hanoi takes about two hours each way and works best as one boat ride plus one viewpoint. Trang An costs 250,000 VND per person for a two-hour row, Mua Cave is around 100,000 VND for roughly 500 steps, and the train starts at 93,000 VND.
Is a Ninh Binh Day Trip From Hanoi Worth It?
Yes — a Ninh Binh day trip is the best single day out from Hanoi, and unlike Ha Long Bay it does not need an overnight boat to make sense. You get limestone karst rising straight out of flooded rice fields, a UNESCO-listed river you travel by rowing boat, and temples carved into the base of cliffs, all inside a two-hour drive of the city.
The honest catch is the maths. Two hours down, two hours back, and about six hours on the ground. That is enough for two proper sites, not five. People who try to stack Trang An, Tam Coc, Mua Cave, Bai Dinh and Hoa Lu into one day spend most of it in a van and remember none of it.
What Does a Ninh Binh Day Trip Cost in 2026?
Less than most people expect. Tickets are set by the site operators and are the same whether you arrive independently or on a tour, so the only real variable is transport.
| Item | 2026 price | Time needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trang An boat | 250,000 VND (~$9.60 USD) | 2–4 hours | Some gates quote 300,000 VND including entry |
| Mua Cave | 100,000–150,000 VND (~$4–6 USD) | 1–1.5 hours | About 500 steps to the top |
| Tam Coc boat | 250,000 VND (~$9.60 USD) | 2 hours | Alternative to Trang An, not an addition |
| Train from Hanoi | From 93,000 VND (~$3.60 USD) | 2h09 | Six departures daily, 06:00–21:45 |
| Limousine van | ~200,000 VND (~$8–12 USD) | 2 hours | Door to door, most popular option |
| Bus | $6–14 USD | 2–2.5 hours | Lowest cost, least comfortable |
Converted at roughly 26,100 VND to $1 USD. Prices at the boat piers vary slightly between sources and seasons, so carry cash and confirm at the ticket window rather than paying anyone who approaches you in the car park. Cash is still king outside the cities — the piers do not reliably take cards.
All in, an independent Ninh Binh day trip lands around 600,000–900,000 VND ($23–35 USD) per person including transport, two sites and lunch.
Trang An or Tam Coc — Which Boat Should You Take?
On a Ninh Binh day trip you realistically get one boat ride, so choose deliberately. Take Trang An if it is your only boat. It is the UNESCO-listed Trang An Landscape Complex, 2,168 hectares of karst and waterway, and the route takes you through a chain of low caves where you duck under the rock. Three routes exist, running two to four hours; the shortest is the right choice on a day trip. Boats run 07:00 to 17:00 and the last departures leave earlier than you would like, so aim to be at the pier before 14:00.
Take Tam Coc instead if you are coming in the second half of May or the first half of June. That is the golden rice window, when the paddies either side of the river turn yellow and the province runs its Tam Coc – Trang An rice festival. Outside those few weeks Tam Coc is the lesser of the two.
Do not do both. They are the same activity — a woman rowing you between limestone cliffs for two hours — and the second one is simply the first one again with a different view.
Is Mua Cave Worth the Climb?
For most people, yes, and it is the single best photograph you will take on a Ninh Binh day trip. Mua Cave is about 500 stone steps up a karst ridge, ending at a dragon sculpture with the Tam Coc river valley laid out below. Entry is around 100,000 VND, though some sources list 150,000, and the site opens 06:00 to 19:00.
Be realistic about the climb. The steps are uneven, steep in places and completely exposed — in June or July that is a serious effort in 35 °C heat. Go at opening time or after 15:00, bring water, and wear shoes with grip rather than sandals. If anyone in your group struggles with stairs, they can wait at the lotus pond at the base, which is genuinely pleasant.
How Do You Get From Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
Three sensible ways, and the right one for your Ninh Binh day trip depends on how early you want to start.
Shared limousine van is what most visitors use. Around 200,000 VND per seat, hotel pickup in the Old Quarter, about two hours door to door. Book the night before; the early-morning departures fill first.
Train is the most comfortable and the most fun. Six services a day run from Hanoi station, and the fastest takes 2 hours 9 minutes. Soft seats start at 93,000 VND, sleeper berths run to 350,000 VND, and the VIP cabin on the SE19 is 443,000 VND. You still need a Grab or a rented scooter at the other end, because Ninh Binh station is not walking distance from the sites.
Private car costs more but buys back the thing a Ninh Binh day trip is short of: time. It also lets you leave Hanoi at 06:30 rather than 08:00, which in practice is the difference between a calm day and a rushed one.
Whichever you pick, Grab works in Ninh Binh for the short hops between sites, though cars are thinner on the ground than in Hanoi and you may wait ten minutes.
What Is a Realistic Ninh Binh Day Trip Itinerary?
This is the plan that fits, without running. It assumes a 07:00 departure from Hanoi.
| Time | What | Why this order |
|---|---|---|
| 07:00–09:00 | Hanoi to Ninh Binh | Beat the tour coaches out of the city |
| 09:00–11:00 | Trang An boat, short route | Cooler, calmer water, fewer boats |
| 11:30–12:30 | Lunch — goat meat and com chay | The local speciality, near the pier |
| 13:00–14:30 | Mua Cave | Heat is bad, but the light is better |
| 15:00–15:45 | Hoa Lu ancient capital or Bich Dong | Optional, only if you are ahead |
| 16:00–18:00 | Back to Hanoi | Home before the evening traffic |
Bai Dinh Pagoda is the obvious cut. It is the largest Buddhist complex in Vietnam at 539 hectares, it is mostly modern, and doing it properly costs two hours plus an electric buggy ride. Leave it for a second visit or an overnight stay.
When Is the Best Time for a Ninh Binh Day Trip?
October and November. Northern Vietnam runs 18–28 °C then with the lowest humidity of the year, which matters when your day involves 500 steps and an open boat. December to February stays cool at 16–23 °C and dry, though grey skies flatten the karst scenery in photos.
Mid-May to mid-June is the wildcard: hot and sticky, but the only time the Tam Coc rice is gold. July and August are the wettest months and the hardest work. A Ninh Binh day trip still runs in rain — the boats do not stop for a shower — but the steps at Mua Cave get slippery and the viewpoint disappears into cloud.
Whenever you come, pack a hat, sunscreen and something with sleeves for the temples. Shoulders and knees covered is the rule at Bai Dinh and Hoa Lu, and our packing list covers the rest of the north.
What Should You Watch Out For?
Three things, and they account for most of the complaints people bring home from a Ninh Binh day trip. First, the rowers work for tips and will often produce embroidery to sell halfway down the river — 50,000–100,000 VND is a normal tip, and a polite no to the merchandise is fine. Second, anyone selling you boat tickets away from the official window is not the official window. Third, the boats fill by the boatload, so a solo traveller may wait to be paired up; arriving before 09:00 avoids this entirely.
Food is the underrated part of the day. Ninh Binh’s specialities are goat meat and com chay, a crisped rice cracker, and both are worth ordering over whatever the tour restaurant is pushing. If you are new to eating outside restaurants in Vietnam, our guide to street food safety applies here as much as in the city.

FAQ: Ninh Binh Day Trip From Hanoi
How long is the drive from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
About two hours each way by limousine van or private car, and 2 hours 9 minutes on the fastest train. That leaves roughly six usable hours on the ground.
Can you do Ninh Binh as a day trip, or do you need to stay overnight?
A day trip works well for two sites — typically Trang An plus Mua Cave. Stay overnight only if you want Bai Dinh, Hoa Lu, Cuc Phuong National Park or a sunrise at the viewpoint.
How much is the Trang An boat ticket in 2026?
250,000 VND per person, roughly $9.60 USD, for a two-hour route. Some gates quote 300,000 VND with entry included. Buy at the official window and pay in cash.
How many steps is Mua Cave?
Around 500 stone steps to the dragon viewpoint. They are steep, uneven and unshaded, so go early or late and bring water.
Is Ninh Binh better than Ha Long Bay?
For a day trip, yes. Ha Long needs an overnight cruise to be worth the travel time, while a Ninh Binh day trip gives you comparable karst scenery in half the day and at a fraction of the cost.
What is the best month for a Ninh Binh day trip?
October and November for weather. Mid-May to mid-June if you specifically want the golden rice at Tam Coc, which is hotter but far more photogenic.
