Arriving at Da Nang Airport (DAD) 2026: A Step-by-Step First-Timer Guide

Da Nang International Airport (DAD) is one of the easier arrivals in Vietnam. It sits only about 3 km from the city center, so once you are through the formalities you are close to almost any Da Nang hotel. This guide walks you through the exact order of what happens, what to have ready, and how to reach your hotel without overpaying.

The arrival sequence, in order

Whether you clear immigration depends on where your flight started. Many arrivals at Da Nang are domestic and skip it entirely.

1. International flight: leave the aircraft, follow signs to “Arrivals” and immigration, clear a manual passport counter, collect your checked bags, pass customs, then enter the arrivals hall.
2. Domestic flight (arriving from elsewhere in Vietnam): there is no immigration. Go straight to baggage claim, then out to the arrivals hall.

Immigration (international arrivals only)

Foreign tourists cannot use the automatic e-gates on entry, so join the manual counter queue even if the e-gates look open. Have your documents in hand before you reach the officer to keep things moving. Da Nang’s immigration is usually quicker and calmer than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, but a peak international bank of flights can still form a line, so build in a little patience.

• A passport valid for at least 6 months.
• Your e-visa printout or visa. A printed copy is safest in case you are asked for it.

• Reaching for the e-gate. As a foreign tourist, use the manual counter on entry.
• Buying everything at the airport. A SIM card at an airport counter works, but city shops are often better value. If you only need data for the ride to your hotel, a small top-up is enough.
• Changing a lot of cash on arrival. Airport exchange rates are usually poor and ATM fees add up. Change a small amount if you need it, then withdraw more in the city.

The yellow Bus 1 to Hoi An is inexpensive but slow, and it drops you at a station rather than your hotel, so it suits travelers with time and light luggage more than someone arriving tired at night.

Da Nang or Hoi An: where to base

Many first-timers land unsure whether to sleep in Da Nang or push on to Hoi An. Both are close, so you are not locked in.

• Base in Da Nang for the beach, a bigger choice of restaurants and cafes, and the convenience of being minutes from the airport.
• Base in Hoi An to be right next to the Ancient Town, with quieter evenings and a slower pace.

A common approach is to split the trip: a few nights in each. If you are arriving late and tired, a first night in Da Nang keeps the transfer short; if the Ancient Town is your main reason for coming, going straight to Hoi An saves you a second move.
